Hot off the press - the updated pattern for the most comfortable, wearable and easy to use face mask around. I have a big family. None of them sew. SO, (or sew.) I am making a bunch of masks for them all. In the Tip Tuesday video, I will show YOU a few tips on cutting and sewing a bunch at the same time.

I'm not going to open that vintage apron company. So I am going to hold a contest. After 20 years of sewing at speed, I find it irritating to watch people take unnecessary steps and take way more time than they need when they sew. But today in class I had a little eye opener. Josephus Thimister took his life.

NAK is a new adventure: to create a place that approaches the cottage industry of sewing in a way that connects people in Tucson. My goal is to bring people out of their kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, attics and basements to share some time together creating. From the Sewing Basics to the more advanced pattern making and design classes, NAK provides a multidisciplinary approach that "seamlessly" translates ideas into experiences.
For the few months we offered classes here, I learned so much about how learning a new skill like sewing has changed over the last decade since I closed my sewing lounge in Austin. Most people "learn" new skills online now. The challenge for me as a teacher is that the expectations of how much a person can learn in an hour has gone up and attention spans have gone down.
Hot off the press - the updated pattern for the most comfortable, wearable and easy to use face mask around. I just sold my first batch of NAK's M820 masks that I developed with the help of a dentist who has been wearing masks almost every day of his adult life and a mining veteran of 26 years who also has worn face masks nearly every day of his adult life.
Today I ran the first pilot of a new class that I feel is the missing link for indie seamsters. When we are starting out with our own line of clothing or other sewn goods, we often sew the way our mothers or teachers or friends sew: From the book and very carefully. After 20 years of sewing at speed, I find it irritating to watch people take unnecessary steps and take way more time than they need when they sew.
Earlier this month, Josephus Thimister took his life. He was among the last in a line of designers who came of age in the late 1980s and '90s still believing in purity of concept and allegiance to the creative muse above all else, only to discover that in the 21st century, marketing and constant streams of stuff were the new benchmarks of success, that the catchphrase wasn't "vision" but rather a "vision statement."

Needles and Knots is a wonderful shop with folks who sew up masks for covid-19. The owner let me try on two different sizes of the masks to make sure I had a proper fit. She has many fabrics to choose from and she showed me all of what is available.
After I chose the fabrics I liked they sewed up the masks for me while I was there. They did an excellent andl very professional job. I'm totally delighted with the whole experience.
I highly recommend this shop!! You can also shop at their website.

I’ve taken both the Speed Sewing Techniques and Pattern Making Primer so far at NAK and cannot recommend them enough! After each class, I left the studio (which is bright and airy and filled with snacks, by the way) feeling incredibly inspired. Some of the techniques I learned made me think, “Why was I doing it that other way for so long?!”
During the Pattern Making Primer, we learned how to use all of these tools that I had never heard of before and re-created a pattern for our favorite pair of undies. I’m really excited to build on those skills so that I can start sewing my own designs

Shauna is a very patient and knowledgeable teacher. Our class had students with no experience to me, who has sewn a lot over the years. She gave each student appropriate support. Despite having some knowledge of sewing, I learned a lot in the first class and am looking forward to the next class in the series. I highly suggest NAK to all levels of learners. It is a supportive environment, and oh yah she has snacks. 😉
