A freeform pool is a lagoon style pool or naturalistic pool. It usually has rock features and is built to mimic a oasis. Freeform pools have been popular for many years, especially in Bakersfield and Southern California. A freeform swimming pool is designed in a naturalistic style and shape, with gentle curves or flowing lines.

A lap pool is built to provide a straight-away for swimmers training for a sporting event or for those who swim for exercise. Usually long, narrow, and rectangular in shape, a lap pool can be any length, although most average between 50 and 60 feet. Usually, common lap pools may be large enough to accommodate two lanes of swimming traffic.
