Services
Joe is a fourth generation builder and his experience and skills are indispensable, but the other qualities everyone appreciates about Joe are his enthusiasm, helpfulness, work ethic (except Joe doesn't consider it work), and his above and beyond attitude and love of his work. Each new design and project thrills Joe to practice learning and growing and improving.
Every project we build is unique, whether it's created from one of our existing designs or custom designed for your property, each structure is a work of art. Joe Wood combines his perpetual skill advancement, innovation, and love of his craft to make every project better than the previous one. Below you will see a good variety of past projects and the attention to detail we have become known for.
All of our PLANS come with an accurate Materials List, and some also come with Full Sized Template files for the more difficult and critical parts. We email you the files for each Plan page which you can print out at home, and any Full Sized Templates (if needed) can be taken to a printer and printed on 1' wide paper.
Based in San Diego, California, WoodsShop is a group of people interested only in the finest Quality and Detail, and we Custom Build your order with the best of Craftsmanship and Materials. We offer very great Customer Support before and after your purchase, by email, and phone if you call us.

While searching the internet for Japanese tea house plans to complete my Japanese influenced garden and koi pond, I was captivated by Joe Wood's Japanese Azumaya designs.Purchasing the 10' by 12' plans for a curved roof Azumaya, I was amazed at the abundance of detail provided, but soon realized the limitations of my equipment would not allow the precise milling needed to produce the curved rafters with consistent accuracy.
Japanese style design, more than any other, must be simple, balanced, have harmony, and be done with great skill and care using natural materials. I, Joe, do appreciate Japanese style more than any other, especially the Sukiya or Teahouse style. Many of our projects, plans, and kits are in Japanese style design but we do employ some traditional American joinery and western style building techniques.

Joe is without a doubt, one of the most interesting people to be actively pursuing trades-work. I worked for Joe from 2003- 2009, and I have to leave a comment here after the profound effect he had on my life. I had plenty of carpentry experience by way of rough framing when I started, but I was blown away at the creativity and passion he put into each and every project. At that time, most of the contractors I had worked for, were very specific about the amount of time that needed to be allocated to each project. Joe was complete opposite.
From the first day I met him, he preached to me that money

I saw Joe Wood’s website when I was looking for a patio cover. Since I am a sculpture myself, I was very impressed with his designs. I liked his aesthetic, especially the oriental quality. I asked him if he would make me a patio cover for a new deck that had recently been built. He came up with a beautiful idea to cover part of the deck with grey stained cedar that reflected the color of the deck and siding. He suggested that instead of using wood slats on top of the cedar structure, that the covering would be made of 3/4“ bamboo. I really liked that idea. It turned out

We had a WONDERFUL garden gate created by Joe Woods of Wood Workshop! He did a masterful job of overlapping the cedar shake roof and designed a lovely gate. He is a terrific wood worker...we have not seen anyone that knows and creates things in wood, like him!

Our landscape designer hired Joe to design and build a pergola and four gates for us as part of a complete overhaul of our front and backyard. His work stands out as one of the best and most distinctive features of our remodel. While the front gate and pergola are the showpieces, Joe took the two gates for our dog run and the gate for our garbage area just as seriously so that they are as beautiful as the others. Joe was particularly considerate in how much thought he gave to the design of the dog run gates to make them as secure as possible without sacrificing aesthetics. Everyone from friends

Joe Wood is a craftsman. He really enjoys making beautiful objects out of wood. His designs involve intricate patterns and exotic woods and are all beautiful. I am a woodworker and can say from experience that Joe knows what he is doing!
As a business man, Joe excels. He listens and then executes. He stays on the job until finished, too.
I recommend Joe Wood for your simple or exotic project.

Copied below is an email that I sent to Joe Wood in 2005 after he built our beautiful deck, shade structure and spa surround. With top notch craftsmanship and materials, everything has been very low maintenance and has aged beautifully. In 2007, it was even published in Garden, Deck & Landscape Magazine!
We have gotten so much more enjoyment from our home since this project; it transformed our backyard into an outdoor room that we enjoy year round. The quality of Joe's work is so good, that we had him come back in 2009 to restore and add a new cable railing to an old deck in another part of our
