NOTE: This article was written by one of the original, founding members-Annette Cavender. Annette wrote it in commemoration of Garden Center's 60th anniversary in 2000, when she was approaching her own 100th centennial birthday. In 1940, five Garden Clubs existed in San Antonio. Among the members were two women, Mrs. R.A. Witt and Mrs. J. R. Murphy.
They conceived an idea to establish a headquarters that would provide a link between organized clubs and their members, new home gardeners and the general public. The purpose was to generate interest in horticulture, conservation, civic beautification and community projects. The women took their vision to Ellen Quillen, curator of the Witte Museum, who gave the group the use of the Weaver's House located on the grounds of the Witte.

Important but not widely known, San Antonio Garden Center's dedication to creating a Garden for the Blind is the cornerstone of what is today the San Antonio Botanical Garden. Efforts to establish a Garden for the Blind started as early as 1956 and our action came to fruition in 1967. Through years of hard fundraising work, Garden Center members eventually raised $58,000 towards the project-a tremendous undertaking.
San Antonio Garden Center is located off Broadway in Mahncke Park next to the San Antonio Botanical Garden and near Terrell Hills, Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, Monte Vista and Brackenridge Park. Two spacious, adjoining rooms in neutral colors that are a perfect backdrop for any wedding theme and color palette.
All garden club members are invited to participate, along with members of our 'Friends and Society' organizations. In addition to the judged Design Show, all members may also enter the Annual Horticulture Show. There will also be a category for photography. The show is coordinated by the San Antonio Council of Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judges Council.
Vendors and SAGC member clubs and organizations will be selling gifts, dcor, fashions, jewelry and accessories. If you are an area artisan who would like to sell your items, then please contact us early since space is limited. Vendors may keep their day's proceeds. The event also includes a complimentary 11am-1pm tasting buffet of favorite dishes prepared by our members.
Garden Center's annual project provides holiday decorations to non-profit organizations and personal gift bags to underprivileged children, youth, men and women served by the organizations. Rattles, teethers, light up and musical toys, baby mittens, socks, small blankets and stuffed animals.
