He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1984 with a BBA in accounting. Upon his graduation, he began working for Albert Gonzales, CPA. In 1985, he received his Public Accountant Certification making him a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state of New Mexico.
