Here at Intrepid Athletics PDX, our goal is to empower members of the Portland community to achieve their health and fitness goals through our group classes or personal training services. In our gym, everyone who walks through the door is an athlete. Our Fitness classes incorporate barbell lifts, traditional body building, bodyweight movements, Strongperson (think tires and big stones), StrongFit principles, and gymnastics.
We also offer nutrition and lifestyle guidance, team building and strength & conditioning for teen sports, and mobility and recovery training. Our main focus is to teach everyone how to use their bodies and use the right muscles to build strength. The goal is functional fitness but we get there by emphasizing body mechanics (what muscle do you use), technique (how do you use them), and range of motion (how far to move).

Sean, Ruth and Matt have build an amazing community of open, respectful and fun individuals that value diversity and inclusion.
Their number one priority is the safety and well-being of athletes, focusing and obsessing over the getting right movement and technique down.
The programming is well thought out with an overall long term focus. The workouts can be tailored to different levels and are challenging.
A real life changer for me personally.

I have been an Intrepid PDX member for over 3 years now and happy to call this gym home. Recently, I moved (what I thought was) too far away to keep coming to Intrepid and joined another gym closer to my house. Within a month, I was missing Ruth, Sean, Matt and the whole vibe of the gym so much that I HAD to come back. Best decision ever!
The instruction, inclusiveness and care these coaches share with everyone is better than you'd ever see at the typical x-fit gym. If you're just down the street on MLK, or waaaaay across town, it is WORTH it to come these coaches in action. There is

What an incredible community and coaching with such detail, customization, and results! I can't say enough about finding this GEM!
Also, for covid, I have always felt safe... 10x10 boxes taped out on the floor, everyone in masks, everything wiped down after use, 2 huge bay doors open with commercial fans running. It's perfect!

I was out for a walk the other day when I came across this gym just a couple of blocks down from where I am staying. At this point, I've only been in town for a little over a week, visiting a friend, so I was still getting acquainted with the neighborhood.
It was about 2:30pm on weekday and lucky for me there was a really friendly gentlemen there who was willing to tell me a little bit about the gym, the classes, the community, and what to expect on my first day if I chose to sign up. I forget his name at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that he was just one of the clients and not one

I've been an avid CrossFitter for the last ten years and have travelled all over the world dropping into different gyms. I was an affiliate owner for 7 years and ran myself through every certification I could get my hands on. I've been exposed to some of the best coaches in our industry. I can say with full confidence that Ruth was the most knowledgeable coach I have ever worked with. She has the most developed coaches eye I've ever seen. She can pinpoint a breakdown on your movement the moment it happens, identify what's causing it, and provide the correction to improve it

So much more than a gym - this place is a true community. Owners Ruth and Sean are amazing coaches and incredibly thoughtful people as well. Always willing to modify workouts for beginners, injured or pregnant clients and so knowledgeable about CrossFit. If you're been wanting to try CrossFit and meet other cool people in N Portland while working out, this is the place for you.

I think I understand the CrossFit business pretty well - as a previous owner (with my wife) of a CrossFit Gym and as a current member of a CF gym.
To me, there are "focus areas" for any gym business.
Possible Priorities:
1. Member Safety
2. Quality Coaching
3. Business Process management
3a. Member confidentiality
3b. Staff management
4. Investment in new coaching skills and equipment
5. Quality Review and Continuous Improvement
My "positive" experience at Intrepid relates to my multiple drop-in visits while in town on business. On each of my visits, I was received

I visited Intrepid over the holiday week thanks to favorable reviews on Yelp. Intrepid received great reviews regarding the coaching, small class size, and the equipment/set-up. I am pleased to say that all of those positive reviews were extremely accurate.
Since it was a holiday week, I happened to be the only one for the 7 AM class. Sean was coaching and he was fantastic. He provided great lifting advice, made me feel at-home, and allowed me the flexibility to customize my workout. I will definitely return to Intrepid when I visit Portland in the future.

Great people go there, it seems like a good community, but I just had a bad experience. I've been doing CrossFit for a number of years. I bought a 10 pack. Unfortunately I re-injured myself one punch into the use of the service. The 10 pack has a 3 month limit. You have to use it all within three months. They had zero flexibility on this. They would not hold it or extend the timeframe. I get it, everything is "scaleable" right, well sorry sometimes you just need some time off and don't want to sub body-weight squats for toes-to-bar (etc. etc. etc.). I think some flexibility would have gone a long

I've been going to Intrepid for a little over a year now. When I came to Portland, it took me a while to find a gym that felt like home - I am a physical therapist, and I'm picky about gym safety and quality coaching. I went to a class at every crossfit gym in Portland before I chose Intrepid as my gym.
The coaches are knowledgeable and push you to do the best you can, and they are excellent at working with people at all levels of fitness. The community they have created there is supportive and filled with amazing people. I love Intrepid, and can't say enough good things about

I have been a member and part of the Intrepid family for well over a year now. I have nothing but positive things to say about this place. Sean and Ruth really care about fitness, but also care about you as a human. I am treated like, well, part of a family! They make a point to ask me how I am and genuinely care about the answer.
I have been to plenty of gyms and boxes where there can be a huge intimidation factor. Even if you aren't a stranger to a crossfit type gym, going somewhere new can be scary. At Intrepid there is a rule that if current members do not introduce themselves before

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff in a giant space. All of the fellow members made me feel welcome from day one. Most of them come up and introduce themselves if they don't already know you. In fact they encourage the practice of meeting your workout partners at the beginning of each class. Also the equipment is practically brand new. They take care of it here.
What got me to come in is the free sessions they over to newbies. It let's you try before you buy. If you're looking for a crossfit gym this is by far the best I've been to and I e been to 4 others in the Portland

This is our second drop-in at Intrepid Athletics and my wife and I love it, we always feel at home. The owners Ruth & Sean always make us feel welcomed, have great things to share, and offer great programming. We highly recommend this CrossFit Box to anyone visiting the area, just moved to the area or anyone trying to find a new gym.

I am an active individual:climb, surf, weight train, run calisthenics; a master of none, having always considered about joining cross fit, I finally took the initiative. Here's the deets about the gym
1. Low volume from coach to student. Which means you get more face time, technique training from others
2. Focuses on form than looks: they will decrease your weights to make sure you develop good form rather than "looking" good in the cross fit world like making sure you PR and all that.
3. Laid back, but still competitive. No one here is trying to out compete you, you can go to

I can't say enough positive things about Intrepid. I came to the gym as a complete novice, and I was beyond intimidated when it came to entering a real life CrossFit gym. Turns out, I had nothing to be afraid of. The coaches, Ruth and Sean, and every member of the Intrepid community welcomed me with open arms. In just a few short months, I have made so many new friends and feel 100% a part of the Intrepid community/family.
The small class size makes me feel like I'm receiving one on one personal training. Ruth and Sean are both SO knowledgeable and devoted to correct form to prevent

If you are a seasoned athlete or brand new to fitness, Intrepid Athletics is for you. While most of their classes are specifically Crossfit, they also have classes for weightlifting, strongman and gymnastics. Each class I learn something new and I become a better athlete. The coaches and community are incredible and they've developed such an inviting and positive environment. I couldn't be more thankful for these people! 5 stars! Go check it out!

I am not an all star athlete. I'm actually pretty awkward when it comes to most fitness regimes. After much deliberation between joining Intrepid and hiring a personal trainer, Intrepid was the most economical choice. Plus your first class is free!
Flash forward to 5 months later, I have gained so much knowledge about my form and various techniques/practices. Sean and Ruth are very patient and easily adapt workouts to my level. I never feel ignored and the small sized classes definitely help. The gym is also full of awesome and inspiring folks. I love Intrepid Crossfit!!

By far the best Crossfit gym in Portland! Or maybe anywhere (and I've been to a lot of them)
What makes this place so good? Let me tell you.
1. Small classes with focused and dedicated instructors. Ruth and Sean really pay attention to you, and they are invested in making sure you push yourself but that you do so with good form. Their coaching results in sustained improvement without injury.
2. Interesting workouts with several types of classes. You can take straight up, good old fashioned Crossfit classes, and in addition they offer weightlifting, gymnastics, strongman, etc. These focused
