After working for both large and small CPA firms in both public and private accounting, Clay established his own CPA practice in 1980. Around the same time Clay also started tinkering with computers: first a Commodore 64, (remember those?) then a Compaq luggable. The advent of the Lotus spreadsheet made Clay an insatiable PC user.
He soon became treasurer of the Denver Lotus User Group and the rest, as they say, is history. After a couple of years he and David Lippa, CPA merged to form Lippa, Williams & Associates - a partnership that lasted 8 years. During this time Clay spent equal time on accounting and computer support. Around 1984 Clay began using, selling and supporting an accounting program called CYMA that at the time was owned by McGraw-Hill.
