Urban Recess is a sport and fitness company for women founded in 2OO2. We are dedicated to changing the way you take care of your body and how you look at life. Urban Recess was born as an idea to incorporate fun into sports and fitness. As athletic and fitness trainers, we witnessed many of our clients burn out and lose interest in traditional training.
We recognized the need for women to unwind from the stresses of everyday urban living and take themselves back to a time when moving, sweating and exercising were actually fun! We remembered what our favorite time of the day was when we were kids. Recess was a time when we got to go outside and release some energy, laugh, play and be with our friends.

We mean the format. We do not wear camouflage and we do not yell. Simply, this class is based on the Interval Training format, which intersperses cardio bursts (jump rope, obstacle course, etc.) with strength training exercise (Theraband biceps, knee push-ups, planks, etc.). We do this with the goal of maintaining a target heart rate (fat burning zone).
Karin Schmidt is a Certified Personal Trainer and Pilates Instructor. She has been training for over 20 years. She came to Portland from San Francisco in 2007. In San Francisco, she was the Fitness Director of one of the largest clubs in the city. After years of experience, she started Urban Recess and her independent personal training business.
It can be difficult to adhere to a fitness regime. We believe this program can help to change your outlook. As a longtime athlete, gym-devotee and trainer, I observe people struggling with the necessary commitment. I am sad to see people quit - just when I see their results forthcoming! It takes a good two months to see new habits forming and results taking shape.

I just love the Urban Recess bootcamp. I've never been a gym-goer of my own free will and generally will make any excuse not to go - like I have a headache (even if I don't, but because I have the skills to to lie to myself and believe it, this works for me) or 7-11 is having a sale on Snickers or I don't have gas in the car and don't have time to stop and get gas even if class doesn't start for 3 hours. You get the point.
Anyway, Urban Recess is the lone exception in my long list of work out failures. I actually look forward to going. There are a few things that

I have been taking this class since January when I promised myself I was going to be healthy this year. So far I have improved my cardiovascular health, increased muscle/core strength and lost 15 lbs! Karin takes the time to help out the newbies and pushes us to be our best without injuring ourselves. I like the balance between a class and members that support you and keep you committed and having a personal trainer who will correct your moves and show you how to do the exercises correctly to avoid injury and get the most out of your moves. Plus the fitness tips during our cool down are great!
