The Tara Hideaway was officially recognized as a historic landmark in 2008. It was originally opened as Lynch's Chicken Shack in 1929, burnt to the ground in 1931, and was rebuilt a year later in the log cabin style that still permeates to this day. Over the years this location has spawned much lore, from the name Tara deriving from a dog of previous owners to suspected bootlegging and gangster activities of Capone and Dillinger.

We used to really enjoy this place, but the last two visits were very disappointing and the owner really didn’t seem to care. When owners no longer care about a customers experience, it is time to move on. I don’t think that we will give them to opportunity for three strikes, when there are plenty of other options that appreciate your business.

Fabulous environment with a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel as if you were transferred up North. The food I experienced was incredible! I had the sausage soup and salmon from the special menu and both were things I would reorder again and again. There is a nice wine list for such a small place as well. I cannot wait to return and experience this all again.

The place has tables very close together but when we arrived there were very few people there. Nice view of the wooden reveen from our table. Nice that they serve Coca-Cola products. The Roasted Feta appetizer was excellent!!! The Octopus appetizer was excellent but the portion was way too small for the price. The Lagunitas Lil-Sumpin is an excellent beer. The Greek salads were good. The Linguine was very good.
The duck was so tough you could not cut it with a steak knife and was uneditable, the staff was awesome to replace it with Hazelnut Walleye which was fishy tasting with so many bones I

Really great food. I’ve dined here twice and I ordered the same thing. I love the broccolini side with feta. Service is awesome too. Really friendly and helpful. Taking away 1 star for the noise level. I love being amongst people having a good time, but both times it was so loud that I couldn’t hear the person across the table I was dining with.

This is the kind of place that I love! Unique atmosphere, great, service, and excellent food. Had the Lobster bisque and grilled octopus for an app- amazing! For entree I had the duck with potato gnocchi and it was outstanding. I never would have expected to have some of the best cooked duck in a log cabin! I'm so glad I found this place and I will definitely be back.

We came to Stillwater to stay at a local B & B and of course, dinner at Phil's Tara Hideaway to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary. You will not be disappointed no matter your reason for dining. Exceptional food and service. I had the Tara Steak and my wife had the small sirloin. Both were cooked to order and perfection. The salted baked potato and the mashed are both good. We came on a Sunday early evening and it was no problem getting a nice seat at the window near the fireplace. The quaaintness of the log cabin feel is romantic.
