For established lawns: Water only once a week. However, water deep. The best way to know that your lawn is getting enough water is to put down an empty tuna can. Once the can is filled with water, you have watered sufficiently (about an inch of water). If you water a little at a time often during the week you are not doing the roots any good.
Back around the turn of the last century, in the days before the National Weather Service, the so-called goose bone method was a famous weather-forecasting technique. Around Thanksgiving, Grandma would cook a freshly killed goose. She would roast it, carve it, and serve it, always being careful not to cut the breastbone from the carcass.
Preserve your fruits by making your own jams and jellies. It's actually quite easy and you'll enjoy delicious results-free from additives and chemicals. For proper texture, make sure that you use the exact combination of fruit, pectin, acid, and sugar. Some fruits are naturally high in pectin and some are naturally low.
