George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Homes has maintained its family-owned and operated status throughout the 1970s, '80s and '90s era of conglomerate buyouts. The "mom and pop" ownership and management of Hewell & Son have been retained, in fact, with history repeating itself. For many years, George Hewell Sr. called on his wife, Mrs. Anne Hewell, to serve as an officer in the corporation and his helper in the business.
She was vice president of Hewell & Son, and she also served as hairdresser and organist for both funeral home locations. Today, the wife of George Hewell II, Dr. Susan Hewell, is also a corporate officer. She is vice president/secretary, and she, too, is organist/pianist for the funerals. In fact, that's how Susan and George II met: Susan was an established musician in Jacksonville and was called to the funeral home to play for a funeral in 1995.

Services
The Hewell and Son Funeral Homes shares its history of serving Jacksonville families with the history of Jacksonville itself, beginning with Mr. Hewell, Sr. and his affiliation with the Key-McCabe Funeral Home in 1934. Mr. and Mrs. Hewell, Sr. became owners of Key-McCabe Funeral Home in the ensuing years, but the name was not changed to Hewell & Son until 1973.
For some families, the traditional visitation, funeral and burial are the tributes of choice. The funeral may take place in a church, our chapel or the graveside. Some families have photos displayed as a collage or a video playing on one of our flat screen televisions, and they may choose to share these during the visitation, the funeral service or both.
Staff members of HEWELL AND SON FUNERAL HOMES are caring and experienced professionals who understand that each family is unique and has personal requests and traditions. These requests and traditions are of utmost importance to our staff of licensed funeral directors. George H. Hewell II is a licensed funeral director and the owner and president of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Homes.
