Progressive Martial Arts (PMA) offers training in several different styles of martial arts - including Chinese Kenpo karate, practical self defense, Chinese Kuntao, Indonesian Pentjak Silat, aerobic kick boxing, boxing, kick boxing, grappling, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and sport karate. Located in northwest Denver, PMA welcomes beginners and experts alike to train, and we offer a variety of packages to suit anyone's training needs.
Services
Progressive Martial Arts (PMA) was founded in 1985 by Stewart Lauper. Opening our original doors at West 44th Avenue and Harlan Street, PMA's population consisted of only 21 students. Moving to West 29th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in 1987, PMA became firmly rooted as a cornerstone northwest Denver business establishment - and a veritable anchor for the thousands of students who have walked through the doors over the past 30 years.
We understand that everyone is unique and learns slightly differently. In order to accommodate these differences and provide the best environment for learning, the curriculum is presented through a combination of private lessons and group classes. Rank progression is determined by an individual's ability to learn and the amount of time one is able to dedicate to training.
Anyone interested in training at Progressive Martial Arts can start with an introduction package. The package consists of four half-hour private lessons and one hour-long group class, all by appointment. This approach allows the student to "try out" the school, meet different staff members, view the curriculum and get a general feeling for the school's atmosphere.

Really enjoyed my time training here. It's not your traditional kenpo at all. They do a great job working on both standing & ground tactics. The price is very reasonable.

This school changed my life, and in thirty years of training I've never found another school that measured up. Over a decade after relocating, I've retained so much of not just the technical self defense skills, but the mental fortitude, the confidence, and unexpected benefits like an advanced understanding of anatomy and kinesiology that has benefited me well beyond self defense. I recommend PMA for all ages and all skill levels and look forward to the day that I can make it back.

Outstanding training, culture, values and environment. I started about a year ago and expect to be one of those 15 year+ students who (along with owner, Mr. Stewart Lauper) make this school as fantastic and differentiated as it is.

PMA is founded by an impeccable martial artist and humanitarian. World class instruction in a pragmatic, no BS format. This is the best place i have ever trained in 40+ years with other remarkable instructors! If i wasn't a thousand miles away with other obligations, I would be there!

Great school. No frills. No pageantry. Just pragmatic self defense. If you want to learn real world self defense and fighting skills, this is the place for you. Many students are great athletes from different areas of combat sport and traditional sports. All seem to enjoy the comradery and challenge progressive martial arts offers.

PMA is truly in a league of its own. Over the past 15+ years I have seen many children and young adults become incredible young men and women. Confident yet humble, tough yet kind. This is a no-nonsense school - don't expect to find fancy facilities or trendy techniques. What you will find are very well trained black belts, instructors and a great atmosphere. Whether you want to learn a variety of sport fighting disciplines, self defense or just get into shape, this is the place.
