Mark has won "Best Hairstylist" by the Nashville Scene for the past 3 years! He has worked on the Oprah show and was the Titan's Cheerleaders stylist for their first decade in Nashville. He spends much of his free time riding his horses and canning. He learned to cook southern food as a boy in his father's restaurant and still can cook up a storm.

I came here to get my hair cut for the first time since the beginning of Covid and I got my hair cut by Rachel. I let her do whatever she thought would look good and I LOVE it!!! This place double booked my appointment. My stylist spent 5 minutes tops trimming my bangs then passed me to someone else who “styled” my hair, because she had another client. The second person pulled my hair horribly in the process. My hair looked dry and frizzy afterwards. I also had all sorts of uneven areas that were not cut, that will need additional tlc. The stylist didn’t even check on me to make sure everything looked ok. It was a horrible experience and a waste of $84.

Dana has been my hairstylist for almost 25 years. I’ve followed her from one location to another and can’t imagine having anyone else cut my hair.
Dana is amazing at what she does and is a wonderful mixture of both professional and fun - with lots of entertaining stories. She’s taught other stylists for years now. I can just sit, relax and trust that she will do a great job - she always does.
Mark (Cognito’s owner) ensures that Cognito is a relaxed and fun place to visit - and yet the place is consistently immaculate. It’s a great place and I highly recommend Cognito Hair Design.

This salon is amazing! From the moment I walked in I was greeted and treated like family. Rachel did my full highlights, I came in wanting to be blonder. Having been a blonde my entire life, this was one of my better experiences. Rachel did exactly what I wanted and was so sweet. She was thorough at the job but also quick :) my hair ended up looking so great! You can tell all the employees really do care and are so thoughtful. I’m so happy I’ve found my new salon in nashville! What a wonderful place! Highly recommend!

AMAZING EXPERIENCE - let me preface this with saying this is the first Yelp review I have ever done, so I mean this when I say it. This salon is hands down the most enjoyable experience I have ever had. I was greeted at the door by the owner, and immediately welcomed. He gave me a tour of the salon and offered me a cold beverage while I waited on the stylist. I also have a very wavering work schedule and they were able to get me in the same day, which is amazing and very accommodating. I went to Cognito for over ten years specifically for Amanda McClanahan. I always had great service from wedding highlights to my son's first haircut; Amanda has been there for all the big milestones in our lives. I'll be following her Local Honey in East Nashville. I moved to the Nashville area about six months ago, and chose Cognito because I went to a Paul Mitchell salon in my previous city. I cannot say enough good things about this place! The salon is decorated with a mix of modern and rustic touches, paying tribute to the farms many of the stylists own or grew up on. Everyone is so friendly and eager to please, and the quality of service is topnotch. I always leave with a haircut and eyebrow wax by Dana that makes me feel glamorous, and/or nails by Alissa that are perfectly polished. The complimentary wine, beer, and snacks are icing on the cake. Mark Hartman is my favorite stylist ever. I don't live in town anymore but have been known to fly back from out of state to get a great haircut. He was my stylist for over 4 years while I lived in town. He listens to what you want and always makes sure you're happy with the results. I also had him do my makeup for a few events, great work! Great stylist all around! And worth even flying from out of state for when you need the perfect cut and can't find it in your new town. Thanks Mark for the great cuts over the years!

Ok. Except when your stylist makes passive aggressive jabs at you. And you have a crown of darker blond around your scalp because they don't have dryers for lightening hair. I've hesitated giving this review, but when I see the difference in shades of my hair I'm PISSED.

Amanda has been caring for my hair since 2004! I can take her any number of photos and walk out feeling amazing with fabulous hair. The new salon is beautiful, open, and Melanie Joye LMT has her massage studio in a private area in the back. I love Paul Mitchell products & their commitment to no animal testing, & you'll see all the stylists have photos of their animals at their stations. Cognito also chooses a cause of the month and donates to that charity. Great salon, wonderful people, and some good coffee - what's not to love?
