In 1922, William E. Matthews Jr., our founder and my late grandfather, started our funeral home in Smyrna, DE. His dreams and goals were simple in concept, yet lasting in their significance. Bill strongly believed in the ideal of "Service Above Self", and his goal was to provide sympathetic service to those in need.

Services
Edwin Darden's father passed away. By a unique set of circumstances, three different funeral homes in three different states were involved in the arrangements and services. Our lighthouse logo, inspired by Mr. Darden's kind words, is based on a replica of the tower and beacon of the former Bombay Hook Lighthouse, which stood at the confluence of the Smyrna River and Delaware Bay.
Located in what is known on the National Historic Register as the "Benson-Hoffecker House", Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home and Cremation Services is proud to offer one of the finest and largest facilities in the State of Delaware. Home to two former U.S. Congressmen, the house was built in 1829 and features some of the finest features of late Federal style architecture in the area.
Staff members of Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home are caring and experienced professionals who understand that each family is unique and has personal requests and traditions. These requests and traditions are of utmost importance to our staff of licensed funeral directors. A native of Smyrna, Rick graduated from Smyrna High School in 1983.
Most of us plan ahead in life. We plan for our wedding, our children's education, family vacations, and other significant expected life events. We also plan for the unexpected events of life by purchasing home, auto and medical insurance. Understanding the benefits of pre-planning has prompted many to take the step to plan their own arrangements.
Many who have undergone the emotional strain of arranging a funeral within hours of losing a loved one have made the choice to pre-plan their own funeral. Doing so lifts the burden from their loved ones by relieving decision-making pressure at a time of grief and emotional stress. Funeral arrangements are a deeply personal choice.

Rick with Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home was absolutely amazing to work with. This was the first funeral I had to coordinate and Rick walked me through every step. He assisted with every detail and the service and venue were beautiful. Rick's care and professionalism through our loss will not ever be forgotten.

I have been going to Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home since 1978, therefore I have been there a lot of times, not just a few times.. Rick Bryson and His Staff does an awesome job serving all families during their most difficult times loosing a love one.

My grandmother, Betty, was handled here and I was disappointed with how she looked and how it was handled by Mr. Bryson and his staff. We felt rushed, especially at the end when trying to have our final moments with her. I didn't appreciate them standing over our shoulders ready to whisk the casket out the door. It was very disrespectful and should have been better.

Rick and his staff at Matthews-Bryson funeral home were very professional and respectful. Rick did a wonderful job arranging my Dad's funeral according to his wishes. He was thoughtful and kind and it was much appreciated. Even after the funeral he still offered to be of help if needed. Thank you Rick for all you do.
