Our youngest students experience the martial arts in a "Little Dragons" class where they develop improved listening skills and focus which leads to success at school. A positive self-image and "I can do it" attitude becomes ingrained while their motor skills progress giving them an athletic edge in other sports.

Our exciting youth program offers not only an effective self-defense program in a thrilling and extremely fun environment, but also a means for character development and discipline. The program improves focus and concentration, instills self -discipline and respect, improves performance in other sports, and develops a positive "I can do it!"

Emerald City Karate has become part of the bedrock of the Greenwood/Phinney Community with members training at the dojo from every nook and cranny of our neighborhood but it didn't start off that way. Emerald City Karate was founded by Tobey Stansbury who dedicated his life to the Martial Arts at the age of 7 in Yakima, Washington under Morris Mack, Hanshi 10th Dan.
Karate is more than an effective means of self-defense or a dynamic sport. It is a vehicle to improve one's life by refining one's character through our training on the mat. The word 'Karate' is a Japanese word that literally means 'empty hand.' The most basic understanding of this word is that you will learn to protect yourself and your loved ones without the need for anything but your own hands.
We are proud to help support and sponsor the Greenwood Elementary Jog-a-thon and school auctions for nearly every local school in the area. We also support the annual Hunger Goblin drive in October as well as the Greenwood Classic Car Show in June.

We offer transported After School Programs for families in our community and offer special day time classes for home school families who dedicate their lives to the personal education of their family members.Another popular community dojo event is our monthly Parents' Night Out event which is an extravaganza of excitement featuring nerf games, dodge ball, foam sword battles, pizza parties, and more.
Our 2 week trial is designed to introduce you to Emerald City Karate. During the 2 week trial, you will have the opportunity to: learn fun and exciting Karate techniques, familiarize yourself with the etiquette of karate, and get involved with Emerald City Karate's training procedures. This class will give you an opportunity to make your decision for yourself using first hand information.

Phenomenal - the best dojo I've ever seen. We found Emerald City Karate for their summer camps, and my son was so enamored he signed up for karate in the fall - and he brought a bunch of friends, too. He continues to love it, and I am enthralled when I sit to watch Sensei Tobey and his team teach kids and adults with passion and compassion, with skills at both karate and relationship building.

We love this place!
Our 6 year old has been coming here for almost a year and it has been a completely positive experience for him. Sensei Tobey is a master at engaging and inspiring the littles. The tempo and cadence of the class is fun and challenging, sometimes funny and always super cute. We feel supported and like we are a part of the karate community.
I can’t recommend this place enough!

Sensei Tobey and his team are amazing to work with. I just completed the 2 week trial (adult program) and I couldn't be more thrilled. I think the most amazing aspect was the sense of community built from day 1. The other students were as warm and welcoming as the instructors. I have NO prior karate experience and I was NEVER made to feel out of place or behind. I was encouraged at every turn and provided gentle and instructive feedback. And boy did I laugh. Sensei Tobey is a very funny man. I also greatly enjoyed learning about Japanese culture during every class. I am also proud to say I can

Great for adults and kids, but especially for parents interested in training along with their kids. A great environment for fitness and learning.

I started training in Karate at Emerald City Karate about a year and a half ago.
Even though I was born and raised in Japan, I had never done Karate in my life.
Karate has literally changed my way way of thinking.
I've become more patient, I have more focus, and every week I pick up a bit of new wisdom.
If I hadn't met Tobey Stansbury Sensei, the head instructor, my life would have never changed like this.
Besides the physical techniques of Karate he also teaches Japanese Proverbs, and Japanese culture which is something that other Karate Schools do NOT offer in their daily discussions on

Sensei Tobey runs a very well organized, traditional style dojo. Low student-teacher ratio is most beneficial and made for a great training session. His passion for karate and his students is evident in all he does in the dojo. I would highly recommend Emerald City Karate if you are interested in Karate.
