Oshiro Dojo, in San Mateo, California, is the world headquarters (honbu) of the Ryukyu Bujutsu Kenkyu Doyukai (RBKD), an international organization dedicated to the study and development of traditional Okinawan martial arts. Oshiro Dojo teaches the Shima-Ha Shorin-ryu style of Okinawan karate and the Yamanni-ryu style of kobudo (weapons) in a friendly, non-competitive environment.
Karate and kobudo are not only great for developing coordination, physical fitness and self-confidence, but they are also fun, challenging, and fascinating. A typical class focuses on either kata (forms) or kumite (sparring). Kata practice helps develop physical technique and body awareness, while kumite helps students learn confidence versus an opponent, timing, and interpersonal awareness.

The Ryukyu Bujutsu Kenkyu Doyukai (Society for the Study of Okinawan Martial Arts) is an international organization founded in 1985 by Master Chogi Kishaba in Okinawa and Shihan Toshihiro Oshiro in the United States for the purpose of studying and developing traditional Okinawan karate and kobujutsu technique.
Shihan Toshihiro Oshiro, co-founder and Chief Instructor of the RBKD, has studied martial arts for well over 50 years, earning advanced degrees in karate, kobudo, as judo, and kendo. Shihan Oshiro was born in Haneji, Okinawa and began training in karate as a young man.
He had the opportunity to learn karate and kobujutsu directly from many masters of Okinawan martial arts, including Sensei Shoshin Nagamine, Sensei Chogi Kishaba, Sensei Masao Shima, and Sensei Seigi Nakamura. In 1978, after serving as a police officer in Okinawa, Shihan Oshiro emigrated to the United States to teach Okinawan karate.

I've attended the dojo as an adult student for over 10 years. Shihan Oshiro has an exceptional level of technique and skill -- as far as traditional Okinawa empty hands and weapons technique I believe he is among the best in the world -- as well as being a humble, caring and funny person. He is great with kids and I've witnessed how he brings out the best in them and how much they love being in his classes.
If you visit the dojo, you will see a lot of students, both young and old, who stick with him for many years, which I think says a lot about the environment and ongoing learning

This place is awful! The Shishan openly HIT his students with an open hand on their rears, legs, etc. Instead of correcting what they are doing wrong , he just them "no!" And then proceeds to "corrects them" by hitting them with a pool noodle! There is no stretching involved and then he expects his students to drop into the splits as far as they can go. Pulled groin muscle anyone? If you are looking for a place with no instruction, low self esteem and someone to hit your child, then this is a place for you. Ridiculous that they let people like this teach!

Both my kids started studying karate at Oshiro Karate Dojo at around five years of age. The head instructor, Shihan (master) Oshiro, is, as a previous reviewer states, absolutely fantastic with the little ones. He makes learning karate fun, but at the same time instills in them a sense of respect and self-discipline.
In fact, all the instructors (including junior black belt - waka shodan - students who often assist during classes) are black belt rank, super nice and exhibit tremendous patience while teaching the students.
When a specific belt rank is achieved, the students begin to practice
