I have been involved in martial arts since the early 1970's, when I saw my first Bruce Lee movie "Chinese Connection". Between 1970 and 1988, I trained in and studied numerous martial arts such as Chinese Gung-Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and Shao Lin Boxing just to name a few.
In 1988 a friend (Jeff Green, now Kwan Jang Nym or Master) invited me to come to a free class at his Do-Jang on Simmon street in Galesburg, Il (Kuk Sool Won of Galesburg) to meet his instructor Bob Zefo (now- Kwan Jang Nym). After that class I was hooked, I was promoted to 1st degree black belt in 1991, and began formally teaching.

As a martial arts instructor, I see each of my students not only as a student but as a future instructor as well, and my method of instruction demonstrates that. Our Do-jang (school) motto is: "Building a better community one Martial Artist at a time, by Building Self-Esteem, Self-Respect, and Self-Confidence through effective Self-Defense!"
Great respect should be given to your uniform. It should be neat and clean for each class, as this is a reflection of your respect toward your uniform, your Do-Jahng (school), your instructor as well as yourself. Your belt (Di) should never be placed on the ground or floor. When putting on your uniform, hang the belt (Di) around your neck.
White belts and yellow stripes can use our school sparring gear, however, the student must have their own mouthpiece and males must also have their own groin cup and supporter (these two items can be purchased locally at WalMart, Target, sporting good stores, etc.) When a student reaches Yellow belt, they are required to purchase their own sparring gear.
Grandmaster In Hyuk Suh spent more than forty years of single minded practice and research in order to learn, compile, master and organize the more than 3600 techniques that comprise Kuk Sool. Grand master Suh founded Kuk Sool Won in 1961 and brought it to the United States in 1974. As a martial arts system, Kuk Sool Won Is a systematic study of all the traditional fighting skills which together comprise the martial art history of Korea.

I attended classes for roughly 2 years and progressed decently while i had at first. Towards the end of my stint things got real shaky, we would get taught something and train for weeks being told by 1 instructor that we were doing it right, just to have a week with another instructor to show us differently and would have to retrain the new way to continue training, just to have it start all over again with a different instructor. This happened for about the last 2 months i was enrolled and the pandemic hit. I lost my job due to the pandemic and couldnt afford classes any longer and tried contacting

Tricked my husband into signing a one year contract. Told him to meet him there 20 min before class and got there 5 minutes before class instead. Put a contract in front of him while they talked about other things and then boom. This is not common practice for other martial arts places in the area to make you sign on for a year. We did not know what we were signing. What a scam. Disgraceful. Buyer beware. My 6 year old attended one month and didn't like it. Had little to no instruction and was packed in like a rat. He is now suing us for upwards of $3000. My son is 9 now. What

To address the one negative review, we all sign 12-month contracts ea. year. If you breach contract and don't try to work it out with the person you signed the contract with, you eventually get sent to collections. This is ridiculous to put into a review of a business. He is also misleading everyone because his second child was signed up 2 weeks later and his wife told him about the 12-month contract in front of me, but you told her to sign it anyway, so pretending you didn't know about the 12-month contract is a lie with respect to the second child at a minimum.

My son has attended for 3 years now. He has anxiety, ADHD, and Autism. KSW has taught him dedication, determination, and commitment. He has worked his way up by sticking with it and practicing. He seems to focus better through his work with Master Ben. Part of working your way up to eventual black belt is working with lower belts. My son assists lower belts learn new skills this helps him with his skills. Master Ben works with him and others on being better helpers. We started with just attending a few sessions, then did a six week trail package. We now do the year contract. The contract spells

Master Ben Mitchell has been my instructor for several years now. I run the Kuk Sool Won school in Muncie, Indiana.
Master Ben and the students at Kuk Sool Won of Peoria are like a second school-family for me. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, Master Ben is a widely recognized and accomplished martial artist. His students are superb. They regularly challenge and support each other to meet their goals.

I have trained at Kuk Sool Won of Peoria for over a decade. The life lessons taught here breeds leadership. This is hands down the best martial arts school in Peoria Area. Kids love the structure of the classes that are hidden by drills and adults love the high energy classes to get fit while learning to defend themselves. Check them out

I looked all over Peoria for a school that I would have to EARN each colored belt. I have a martial arts background but, admittedly have not practiced in about 10 years. While there are other legitimate schools available. I set about finding one by interviewing each instructor. I told Master Ben what I was looking for and my expectations. Took a couple of free introductory classes and knew that Kuk Sool Won was for me and my entire family.
Now, if you do not like discipline, do not like to sweat, not willing to push your body to the limit and most importantly willing to give between 100% up to

Kuk Sool Won of Peoria is a great martial arts school. The brand new school itself is amazing. It's a great way to keep (or get) in shape and also learn a valuable skill set. Master Ben and all the other instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful. I would definitely recommend it to a friend and anyone else that wants to get in shape and learn something new.

Kuk Sool Won is a wonderful place for our family. All of the instructors are so good and patient with children. I am always impressed with them. My two children (ages 6 and 8) as well as my husband have been students for a year and a half now, and they all really enjoy it. If you are considering a martial arts program, I recommend without reservation Kuk Sool Won of Peoria with KJN Ben Mitchell.

Kuk Sool Won of Peoria is awesome. My kids and I have been training since 2004, and it's been a tremendous source of recreation, discipline, life lessons, and--last but not least--friendship for our family. I can't count the number of times I've said to my kids "It's just like in Kuk Sool Won . . . " and then repeated a lesson they've learned in class about diligence, or respect, or responsibility (or good low stances). Master Ben Mitchell is an outstanding teacher to all ages of students (both of my kids started when the were 4 years old), and he and his black belt instructors are great at bringing
