Services
I have been training in mixed martial arts for over a decade now, and visited Mat Chess today for the first time. It offers excellent Brazilian Jiujitsu and wrestling instruction, with high percentage techniques taught with attention to detail. The instructors are skilled, friendly, and helpful. Also, their kick boxers were some of the best I've seen in the state thus far.
We offer the highest quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training without the egos and attitudes. Mat Chess MMA is the place where beginners and experts train side by side and push one another to get the most out of every class. It's no coincidence that this discipline has spread as one of the most popular training systems in the world.
Muay Thai is a striking discipline that combines punches, kicks, elbows, knees and clinch work into a very complete striking Martial Art. At Mat Chess MMA, no prior experience is required and we're committed to working with students of all skill levels. Teaching people martial arts is what we do!
Each Muay Thai Kickboxing class includes a sports specific warm-up and conditioning, technique taught by our expert instructors, bag work and shadow boxing.Technique is taught based upon a position or strategy, for example, how to throw and land a low kick, and is done on a weekly basis rather than random techniques thrown in without any continuity.

At Mat Chess MMA, our Kids Martial Arts Classes offer top-of-the-line Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction for students from Bryant, Wedgewood, Ravenna, Laurelhurst, and beyond. We keep students active and engaged week after week with classes that are always exciting and challenging. And in the process, we build valuable life skills that will serve them for years to come.
Your child shouldn't have to settle for a boring after school program - or worse, an afternoon home alone. That's why our team at Mat Chess MMA is proud to offer Bryant Elementary School students an incredible new option after school this year. Join us in Seattle for the Play, Study, Train program and enjoy flexibility like never before.

I began my Jiu Jitsu journey here in February 2021 with no experience in BJJ. Andrew, the school’s black belt instructor, was very welcoming and patient with me as a new student. His extensive teaching background in education and study of philosophy accentuates his thorough expertise in the art of Jiu jitsu. I experienced firsthand this great fusion of backgrounds in the way in which I received instruction. Andrew builds upon a low risk, high scoring/high submission system of movements from all guard systems, passing, and work from the feet. There is no better place to begin the art. No stronger

I’ve been training BJJ for about 6 months now at Mat Chess, because of work, I've trained mostly in the mornings (6-7 am, M-F) and it's been clutch for me. A few thoughts below.
1.) Instruction: Professional, organized, consistent, digestible
2.) Environment: No negative egos, welcoming, clean, diverse skill levels
3.) Personal Improvement: Mentally focused, lost +20 lb, inc strength/flexibility, higher confidence
I’m looking forward to when my personal schedule changes to enjoy more the evening BJJ & additional striking classes and I would whole-heartily recommend Mat Chess to anyone.

I wanted to express my gratitude for this particular gym. I decided to try something new and completely out of my comfort zone and was incredibly nervous when I came to my first class for Muay Thai. Andrew was incredibly welcoming and made me feel at ease. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and cater their coaching for all experience levels. If you are looking for a place to feel like you can belong to something that will push you to be better, this is it. Thank you Andrew for all that you do for this community.

I walked into the gym with a small background in boxing and knowing very little about the fundamentals of Martial Arts. If you’re looking for a great workout and a learning experience.
I recommend taking class with Andrew and Roy.
Both are well versed in their respected fields. They not only welcome you as a beginner in every class, but they challenge you with learning how to adapt and utilize your skills for different situations.
Thank you Mat Chess!

I've been to many different jiu jitsu gyms. At other places they just hand out belts based on how many times you go there. At mat chess when Andrew hands you your next belt it's legit. He teaches a complete dominating style of jiu jitsu I have yet to see elsewhere. This place is definitely a hidden gem in Seattle. Highly recommend.

Andrew is an amazing instructor and just after one class it was very easy to see that he has an incredibly deep understanding of Brazilian ju-jitsu. In every class I've been in when Andrew teaches a move or talks about a certain mechanic, the whole class will move to get a better angle to see what he's doing without him asking/saying anything. That kind of active/engaged listening may sound small, but it speaks volumes to his teaching ability and his class's trust/value in his knowledge.
regarding the people in the class, they're great. Everyone is really nice and is super into the sport (both

I was in Seattle for a few days and stopped in to Mat Chess for some training. Very nice, charming, clean, and professional gym. I was welcomed even though I was there only for one class. The instructor is very knowledgeable and the students respectful.
