St. Peter Claver Parish was established in 1972, covering the southeastern corner of Ventura County and Santa Susana. Father James McKeon served as pastor for 19 years. In the early days of the parish, Mass was held in Fr. Jim's living room in the priest's residence on Pittman Street before moving to our current parish center.
In 1996, shortly before Fr. Jim's passing in 1999, Fr. Dennis Mongrain blessed the ground for a new church. By 1998, after more than 23 years of Masses, sacraments and celebrations in our parish center, our permanent church was dedicated. In 2007-2008 Monsignor Gary Bauler led the way in the construction of our Preschool, Kindergarten, and Youth Center to meet the growing demand for Catholic schooling in the area.

Mrs. Meyer has been working at St. Peter Claver Preschool since it opened in 2008. Since then, she has become the most beloved Kindergarten teacher that we have all come to know and love. Her yellow car can be seen driving around town and she is like a movie star to her students! She always has endless energy, an ear to listen, and a smile on her face.
Room 1 holds our youngest students, starting at 2 years and 9 months to the recently turned 3 year olds. Room 1 activities combine learning and play in a safe and caring environment. Through discovery and exploration, teachers find ways to build on children's social development, all through structured play.
In Room 2, our four year old children will continue to strengthen their social and emotional development. Children will learn how to compromise, be respectful and problem solve. Our classroom provides an environment for children to explore, gain a sense of self, play with peers and build self-confidence.
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a bridge that builds into Kindergarten. The TK classroom environment includes many opportunities for social-emotional development and play. We include dramatic play time, small group instruction, and project-based learning. Developing fine motor skills, independence, social awareness and attention span are just a few of the concepts we strive to develop in TK.
The world of five and six-year-old is a world of exploration and discovery. The Kindergarten program should nurture this natural inclination by providing a joyful, stimulating, loving and reassuring atmosphere. In addition, Kindergarten provides a bridge between Pre-School and Elementary School. An important academic foundation will be laid each year and good work habits will be instilled.
