The Lagoon Playgroup is a parent participation preschool. Under the direction of the Director and Teacher, parents have the unique opportunity to actively participate in school events and engage in the classroom on assigned work days. We believe that children learn best when given the opportunity to explore and discover their natural environment.
We cultivate a culture of self-discovery, problem solving, and inquiry. Our beautiful outdoor classroom offers many daily opportunities for children to engage in hands on learning.

Services
Our mission is to inspire children to become creative and independent problem solvers. We are committed to creating a nurturing environment where every child's needs are respected and opportunities that encourage self-discovery through play and project based learning are provided. We strive to develop a collaborative community among children and their families.
The Lagoon cooperative preschool was founded in Belmont Heights in 1948 and incorporated as the Lagoon Playgroup within the State of California. We are a member of the Long Beach Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools and are licensed by the State of California Department of Social Services.
The Lagoon Playgroup operates Monday thru Friday with morning preschool and afternoon Parent and Toddler playgroups. Our Senior class meets Monday / Wednesday / Friday from 9am - 1pm and consists of children who are four years of age by September of the enrollment year. This class is facilitated by a teacher and two volunteer parents.
Under the direction of the Director/Teacher, parents have the unique opportunity to actively participate in school events and engage in the classroom on assigned work days. In addition to working in the classroom, parent commitments include providing snack, attending a monthly parent meeting, participating in school fundraising, joining a school committee and accompanying their child on educational field trips.
At the Lagoon Playgroup, we believe that children are capable and competent beings. We believe that multi layered, rich and complex environments support the children's learning. Every space, indoors and outdoors is created with intention. The studio is a place for imagination, creation, and collaboration.

If i could do 10 stars my family and I would.... coming from bayshore coop to this place was night and day. From anyone who is a first time mom...
Going into Preschool you want the best, you want what's right, you want to feel safe, you want your kid comfortable, and you want the learning that's needed. Teacher Rachel McBride is amazing she's a teacher you want your kids around.... I'm a little sad about us only getting the changes recently. We have been through a few changes at colorado lagoon playgroup the past couple months but the one that held it together was Mrs Rachel

I cannot express the amazing experience my family and I have had joining the playgroup family! This has been the first program that my husband and I have enrolled our son into at the age of 3. Being home with me up until then, was all my son knew, coming to the open house was a real test for us. The moment we walked through the gate he took off with such excitement and security!
I have loved every moment of being a part in his beginning school years. I feel it has really set the tone of his new love of learning, and his outlook on his future years of schooling! Working in the classroom, and evolving

I looked into preschools like we were finding a college...first and only child, it was a scary thought to leave my kid with just anyone!Everything we found up until the playgroup felt impersonal, not nurturing, and strangely dark and dreary. We tried one school and she cried everyday. I wanted a place my kid would LOVE going to in the morning and a place that I could be involved in my child's education and growth. A place that felt bright, joyful, and a place with like minded families. I wanted to have better communication with her teacher, something this previous school lacked! The Lagoon

As a mother, the MOST important thing for my daughter is her well development and safety. The Lagoon Playgroup provide those and beyond! We are so in love with this amazing program!! For me, with out a doubt is the missing link in preschool and education! My daughter LOVES attending! Yes, it's a co-op preschool so parents are expected to work, no way around that! But being involve in the program my daughter is participating it's priceless! I am super sad this is our last year attending :( I truly wish there was something like this for kinder-garden!

This co-op preschool has been a wonderful experience for my son. As a new family in town, we stumbled upon it while visiting the great beach and playground next door. We were lucky enough to land a spot in the junior class (3-4 year olds) when someone else dropped out and we loved it so much our son is now a senior (4-5 year olds). We were looking for a preschool that was mostly outdoors, play-based and with parent involvement and that is just what we found! I love being able to volunteer at the school, attend field trips with my younger child, and communicate with the teacher openly about my child

After researching many preschools all over Long Beach, I found the Lagoon Playgroup to be the best fit for our family by a long shot! From the moment we entered the school, all of the parents and teachers were so incredibly friendly AND you can not beat the location--indoor/outdoor natural play area near the water! The school play based curriculum impressed me as well with everything ranging from arts and crafts to science, beginning reading and writing skills, an organic garden and lots of kinesthetic/fine/gross opportunities for learning. In addition to everything else, the school takes great

This is a fabulous pre school. Both of my youngest children have gone to school here, and my experiences have only been positive. The teacher, Mrs Veazey, is extremely well qualified, dedicated and professional. The location, with its own little beach, could not be better. The parents also tend to form a very close group and work together to make the school as good as it can possibly be.

I wish I could give a review based on interaction or experience but I can only offer one based off of the lack of both. I reached out by phone and e-mail numerous times on several separate occasions with no response. None.
I've heard great things but it looks like I will never have the opportunity to see for myself.
Such a bummer.

My son and I absolutely loved our experience at Lagoon Playgroup. Everyday he asked if it was a preschool day! Mrs. Veazey is loving, nurturing, and really goes above and beyond. One day a child brought in a space ship rocket toy made out of a soda bottle for Show and Tell. The kids thought it was the coolest thing, so Mrs. Veazey tied it in to her lesson plan the following week when they were learning about Earth Day (reduce-reuse-recycle) and they all got to make their own! There's a garden where the kids can harvest and eat strawberries and snap peas and you can't beat the location
