Crowns and most bridges are fixed prosthetic devices that resemble natural teeth. They are cemented onto the existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by a dentist. This is different from removable devices such as dentures, which can be taken out and cleaned daily. Crowns are tooth-shaped "caps" that are placed over a tooth and cemented into place.
Inside the tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. The pulp is what helps to grow the root of your tooth as it develops. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, a root canal treatment is necessary. A root canal procedure cleans and reshapes the tunnels or canals in the tooth (where the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth reside) in order to save the tooth.
An implant is a procedure in which a titanium rod or post is placed in the jaw to replace a missing tooth. When the jaw heals around the implant, the dentist makes a precision connector and a crown to fit over the implant to complete the missing tooth replacement. There are several advantages to using an implant compared to other options for tooth replacement.
