Budo Dojo is a school of traditional Japanese martial arts, teaching aikido and self-defense in the Portland metropolitan area for over 20 years. Aikido is a non-competitive but powerful martial art that teaches us to unlock our potential. It improves health, confidence, and spirit, making strong, healthy human beings. Visitors are welcomed and encouraged to drop in and observe classes or try out a free introductory class. If you are wondering if aikido is right for you please take advantage of our free class offer.
Services
The Budo Dojo Kid's Aikido classes are for children 7 - 12 year of age. Classes provide a unique way for your child to learn about personal empowerment as well as self-control through the development of mind, body and spirit. Students also learn the importance of good posture, balance, and focus.

Along with body development, our kids also learn the value of respect and discipline, as these values are among the more crucial areas of learning Aikido.Your kids can begin training in Aikido right away and take advantage of one free class to see if Aikido is right for them. You don't need to wait for a special starting date as classes are ongoing.
Budo Dojo is a proud member of ASU (Aikido Schools of Ueshiba), under Mitsugi Saotome Sensei. Testing and certification is accredited through ASU. Student membership with ASU is required for testing and earning rank. ASU membership costs $50 / year. New dojo members pay the ASU annual fee during registration.
We frequently host seminars with some of the most talented and senior aikido teachers in the country, known for their cutting-edge principles and techniques. In addition to our annual seminar with John Messores Shihan, we have been honored to host other guest instructors including Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan; Dan Messisco Sensei and Yoshi Shibata Sensei.

The teaching quality at Budo Dojo is the best I've ever experienced. They really care about the students. The teachers are wonderful and they work really well with people of all skill levels from complete beginner to highly experienced. This place is great and I've learned so much in a short period of time.

I drove by this place and saw people practicing with swords. It looked so cool, and since I wanted to practice a martial art (I've had 3 months of boxing and 3 months of Jiu Jitsu training before) I started researching Aikido. The concept of Aikido sounded absolutely fantastic. The prices of this place were good, so I went in for a trial session. There was lots of throws (where you were told to let a 12 year old throw you). A gentleman in his 50s was instructing that day, but by the end of the session, I wasn't convinced that this was a real martial art, so I asked the instructor if he could block

The sacred martial art of Aikido is well respected, well preserved and we'll taught at this highly regarded dojo. The main Sensi Dan Penrod teaches a way that is both easy to digest and a pleasure to learn. He is so easy to get along and communicate with that you almost forget that he is a well trained blackbelt that could literally put almost anyone on the ground in less than a second. He is a true master of the art, even though he'd likely never call himself a master. Honestly the most amazing aspect of Aikido for me is how such massive movements can happen on such big opponents with such little

My daughter trains at Budo Dojo and she loves it! She looks forward to every Tuesday and Thursday because of the other kids and her Sensei. Sensei Dan keeps the class fun and the kids get a great work out.

I visited Budo Dojo for the first time this week and was delighted with the warm welcome I received. In the course of a twenty year martial arts career, I trained in dozens of dojos here and abroad, including for many years at the home dojo of the chief instructor.
Because I hadn't trained in a long time, I arrived in street clothes with no intention to train. I was mostly just curious to see how people in my old school were now practicing. I also really love aikido in and of itself.
Well, it didn't take long to see that the instruction was exemplary and the practice was being conducted very

A very friendly and respectful environment. Sensei Dan has changed the way I think about strength and power.
And the mats are some of the most comfortable I've ever been dropped on -- makes a world of a difference.

Budo Dojo has been an excellent source of Aikido instruction. As a new student I found the Dojo supportive and welcoming making it easy to jump right in and focus on the techniques and personalized instruction that help me grow with each class.
