OpenWise Learning (OWL) is part of the larger OpenWise social enterprise. OWL is a youth development organization serving marginalized kids by providing them with STEM education with an emphasis on Technology, Social Justice, and Ecological Justice. We follow our young scholars from middle school through high school.
We provide them with educational and professional opportunities in apprenticeships through our sister organization OpenWise and other partner organizations. We're opening new pathways to STEM careers for marginalized kids, expanding their understanding of the world, and providing them with the tools to contribute to their local and global communities.

A world where every child can develop their potential in science, technology, engineering and math. Our philosophy is to empower kids with knowledge of the natural world and technology and to instill in them a sense of responsibility to their communities and our planet.
Through our blended and global approach to STEM education we hope to provide marginalized kids with applicable college and career-ready skills, and a larger understanding of the world outside of their immediate context.We want them to develop an appreciation of their place in the world their responsibility to themselves and their communities as global citizens.

Culturally responsive pedagogy is a student-centered approach to teaching in which the students' unique cultural strengths are identified and nurtured to promote student achievement and a sense of well-being about the student's cultural place in the world.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Academic Year Sessions is the second program in which OWL Scholars take part after graduating from the OWL Immersive. During the school year we meet with the Scholars biweekly and work with them to deepen the knowledge and skills they acquired during the Immersive. The Scholars continue to work with the Raspberry Pi computers they were given during the summer OWL Immersive and with these tools we explore particular STEM & Social Justice topics.
An important aspect of encouraging Scholars to push through the hard, but rewarding work of studying STEM content is by providing them with diverse role models. Particularly important are role models to whom they can relate to ethnically, economically, or by gender. This helps to breakdown many of the stereotypes that the Scholars have learned from other aspects of society about who belongs in a particular line of work.
Our first organizational goal is providing real world education and experience in STEM careers to our Scholars. Our Scholars gain professional experience and soft skills through our Apprenticeship program. The other purpose of our Apprenticeship program is to expand the off-line social network of our Scholars opening them to connections and opportunities that they may not otherwise have access to.
