James H. Sheridan was born in Athens County, Ohio. He moved to Lancaster, Ohio in the late 1890's. He was the 223rd person to receive an Ohio Embalmers license in 1902. He joined with Stropel & Stropel Funeral Home that was located at 130 W. Main Street in Downtown Lancaster where he met his wife. Shortly after 1903, James Sheridan became a partner in the firm and the business was renamed Stropel & Sheridan Funeral Directors.
The funeral home relocated in the 1920's to 139 S. Columbus Street and was renamed James H. Sheridan Funeral Home. He was the first to purchase a motorized funeral coach in Fairfield County. He received his Funeral Director's license in 1933. The funeral home was later renamed the James H. Sheridan and Sons Funeral Home.
