Shorin-Ryu Karate of Williamsburg is the premier training center for traditional karate-an alternative to the costly, contract-based martial arts schools today. The benefits of our training go beyond powerful self-defense skills. Weight loss, stress relief, whole body fitness, focus and confidence make our classes an invaluable training experience for families and individuals.

Our family-run facility is one of the most authentic martial art centers in the area and we are the United States training center for our headquarters in Japan. We teach and practice the art of Shorin-Ryu Karate from Okinawa, Japan which focuses on self-achievement and discipline through strong physical and mental training.

A: Shorin-Ryu Karate was invented on the tiny island of Okinawa, Japan. Developed through centuries of trial and error karate is known around the world as the most effective self-defense system ever created. Our karate is known for it's "hard" techniques. Hard techniques are strikes with the hands, feet, elbows and knees, usually delivered in an efficient straight, rather than circular, path to the target.
The use of dojo courtesies and Japanese customs in the karate school is absolutely deliberate. The attention to these humble actions allow us to let go of ego and embrace the culture from which karate comes from. Everyone treats one another with mutual respect and understanding during and after training and makes every effort to carry that into their everyday lives.

Excellent instructors, solid teaching with a decidedly traditional flavor, the best workout you will get all week tempered with useful techniques and kata...I and four of my children, ages 10 to 15 are quite enjoying it, even when we feel we can't manage just one more push up...somehow the enthusiasm of the instructors is catching and we (and they) are proud of what was accomplished at the end of class. There is a separate class for younger children, and all the Senseis work hard to make sure each student is taught at their ability level. I highly recommend this Dojo.
