Scanlon Funeral Home was established in 1956 when James J. Scanlon opened the first funeral business in Harrisville, New York. He later expanded the firm by opening a second funeral home in Croghan, New York in 1973, and has since served the Lewis County area longer than any other funeral firm.

Jim's son, James E. Scanlon, associated with the funeral homes for many years, assumed ownership in 1998 and now runs the day to day operations of the family's business. We believe that "thoughtful attention to detail" and "caring beyond the expected" has been the measure of our success.
We plan ahead for our children's future, our retirement, even our monthly bills. However, very few of us plan for funeral arrangements, even though this may be one of the most painful ordeals our loved ones will struggle through alone. Scanlon Funeral Home can help you plan a final tribute, whether needed in the immediate or distant future.
By providing surviving family and friends with an atmosphere of care and support in which to share thoughts and feelings about death, funerals are the first step in the healing process. It is the traditional way to recognize the finality of death. Funerals are recognized rituals for the living to show their respect for the dead and to help survivors begin the grieving process.
The basic Military Funeral Honors (MFH) ceremony consists of the folding and presentation of the United States flag to the veterans' family and the playing of Taps. The ceremony is performed by a funeral honors detail consisting of at least two members of the Armed Forces. The Funeral Honors rendered to you or your veteran will be determined by the status of the veteran.
Some of the deceased's family members may be able to receive Social Security benefits if the deceased person worked long enough under Social Security to quality for benefits. You should get in touch with Social Security as soon as you can to make sure the family receives all of the benefits to which it may be entitled.
