Services
Bernard J. Dougherty, Established Kobayashi Dojo in Cape Coral 1986 and is the master instructor (Shihan). Shihan Dougherty is a 45-year practitioner in the art of Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do.
He currently holds the rank of Nana-dan (7th degree black belt) in International Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Federation (IHSKF) and holds the rank of San-Dan (3rd degree black belt) in International Kenshin-Ryu Kobudo Association (IKKA) Okinawa Kobudo (weapons).A 60-year resident of Lee County, Shihan Dougherty is very involved in the community in which he lives and is committed to providing quality teaching to students of all ages.

Receiving my black belt has been one of my life's most important achievements. Karate has taught me the power of hard work, patience, and discipline. It also helped me to gain confidence and to move outside of my comfort zone. Additionally, Kobayashi Dojo has such a strong community. My siblings and I have been so lucky to have practiced karate together, and the dojo community has always felt like family.
Shito Ryu Karate is one of three major styles of Japanese Karate Do. This style teaches Speed, Power, Balance, Focus with Efficient Technique. It teaches Self-Defense along with the culture of this Martial Art. We teach our students this style in order to be strong inside but not aggressive. Our style of Karate-Do helps built superior Character and Confidence that lasts a lifetime.

I have been attending Kobayashi Dojo since 2021. This long-running dojo is a great choice for adults, teenagers, and kids.
Shihan Bernard and Sensei Yuki are very community oriented and foster a family atmosphere. They proudly display the accomplishments of their students on their walls and you see their decades of positive influence when former students come back to visit.
Their karate embodies Japanese culture and self improvement. The classes are very welcoming of new students, with the adult classes including young, middle-aged, and older people.

My daughter started as a white belt and just earned her black belt. She grew up in this Dojo. I have nothing but positive things to say about this place. Wonderful, highly skilled and supportive instructors.… Great communication with families and prices are reasonable. It is clean and safety is a top priority. I would highly recommend Kobayashi Dojo to both kids and adults interested in karate.

Everything I know about focus, discipline , respect, and self-defense — I learned at Kobayshi dojo. I’ve been a part of this family for nearly 15 years. Shihan Bernard Dougherty and Sensei Yuki are outstanding instructors and have combined over 40 years of knowledge and discipleship in this Traditional Japanese Art of Karate. If you’re looking for an excellent workout, a large syllabus of learnings, and to be taught by the best lee county can offer, look no further!

My husband has an affinity for this dojo as he's also a student there and at first I was a little hesitant but I've witnessed marked improvement in my sons discipline and respect.
