Adoption and Collaborative Reproduction (Surrogacy and Donors) is both exciting and stressful. For prospective parents considering adoption or assisted reproductive technology (ART) as a means to achieving their family building goal, there are many steps to work through and details to consider both before starting the process and throughout the process.

Having an experienced, client centered attorney like Jennifer and Catelyn guide you through this journey can help minimize risks and reduce problems that could arise. Jennifer Fairfax and Catelyn Slattery are attorneys who together have decades of experience in representing clients growing their families through adoption, surrogacy and with the use of sperm, egg, and embryo donors in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
An adoption legally creates a parental relationship between a child and an adult. Once an adoption is finalized, the relationship between the parents and child is as if the child had been born to them, and the parental rights of the biological (birth) parent(s) are terminated. Maryland adoption statutes require that any child over the age of 10 years must consent to the adoption.
An adult adoption, which is allowed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (in certain circumstances), occurs when one adult adopts another. Regardless, you will need an attorney and Jennifer or Catelyn will help you complete your adoption and answer all your questions if you've ever wondered, "Can you adopt someone over 18?"
Breaking the Seal of Adoption is a process in which a birth parent or adoptee seeks release of either identifying or non-identifying information from their sealed adoption records, which were closed by the Court when the adoption was finalized. Before you begin trying to access sealed adoption records, you should know that the process of obtaining them will vary by state.
Domestic adoptions are adoptions handled in accordance with the laws of a state in the United States. Each state has its own adoption laws that govern how an adoptive and birth family locate each other, the amount of living expenses that can be paid (if any), the consent process and revocation periods and enforceability of post-adoption contact agreements.

We are absolutely thrilled with Ms. Fairfax! Our family had a very unusual adoption situation that there was no precedent for and Ms. Fairfax helped us through it every step of the way. She explained all our options and advised us on strategy. We had our adoption hearing this morning and we overjoyed with the result.

VERY highly recommended. She will go the extra mile for you, is always reachable and is willing to hold your hand through difficult processes. Fairly priced and does not nickle and dime you when you continue to ask a million questions. Understanding, knowledgeable, reliable and friendly. You can't go wrong with her and her team.
