The National Home Inspector Examination is the original exam for the home inspection profession. It is the only independent, psychometrically-sound home inspector exam in the United States that has also achieved independent accreditation. Home inspectors who pass the NHIE are career-ready, with proven competence.

The Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors is an independent not-for-profit organization, incorporated in the State of Illinois and tax-exempt under IRS guideline 501c(6).

JD Grewell, ACI was a home inspector and member of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) from 1979 until his passing in 2019. JD strongly believed in serving and giving back to the profession. He served on and chaired many ASHI national committees such as ASHI's Standards Committee for more than 10 years and served for many years on ASHI's national Board of Directors.
If you pass the National Home Inspector Examination and you are eligible for GI Bill education benefits, you may be eligible to get reimbursed for the cost of this exam. You will need to complete a VBA-22-0803-ARE and submit it to the VA for reimbursement. When you submit the VBA-22-0803-ARE make sure you remember to include a copy of your receipt of paid in full for this exam, and a copy of your exam results.
As the industry standard, the National Home Inspector Examination is used in 35 states for home inspection licensing. Home inspectors in non-regulated states are encouraged to take the exam when entering the profession or looking to take the next step in their career. EBPHI has achieved accreditation as a producer of examinations and has also achieved accreditation for its National Home Inspector Examination. Many member based associations/organizations have their own Standards of Practice. EBPHI's sole purpose is to develop and maintain high-stakes examinations for the real estate inspection profession and to advocate for high standards for the profession.
