The Board of Examiners in Counseling exists in order to ensure that the practice of counseling and marriage and family therapy contributes to the general welfare and public interest of the state and its citizens. The Board authorizes and qualifies practitioners by establishing standards for the education, training, and character of Licensed Counselors and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists.

If you are interested in becoming a licensed professional counselor or therapist in West Virginia, you will find the information located here. Individuals currently licensed in another state (licensed at the highest level in your state and have completed all supervision and exam requirement), will need to complete a LPC or LMFT Endorsement Application.
The Board will conduct a random audit for CEU compliance. If you are selected, you will be notified and asked to provide all CEU course materials. Licenses not renewed by the renewal due date shall expire. LPCs and LMFTs who have not renewed their license and continue to practice after the expiration date, is deemed guilty of unlicensed practice.
What documents are needed when a Temporary Permit or Provisionally Licensed Counselor changes counseling positions? A provisionally licensed counselor working in a private practice must submit the following for review and approval before supervision can begin in the position:. Must state that a licensed mental health professional will be onsite while the supervisee is providing counseling services.
The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics in West Virginia provides direction for professional counselors. The Board adopts the American Counseling Association's Code of Ethics as part of this rule and all provisions of the Code of Ethics have the effect as if it were a specifically promulgated rule of the Board.
All Licensed Professional Counselors and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists are required to complete 35 Continuing Education hours biannually to include three (3) hours in Ethics and two (2) hours specific to veterans and or families of veterans. For LPCs, the Ethics training must be based on or include the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics; for LMFTs, the AAMFT Code of Ethics should be used.
