West Hartford Counseling Center is a community of independent therapists who share common values about psychotherapy. Founded in 1987, West Hartford Counseling Center believes in a holistic approach that integrates mind, body and spirit. In a relaxed, comfortable environment, each client's personal growth process is respected and supported.
While each person's needs and goals in therapy are different, our work is guided by a recognition that childhood experience profoundly influences adult life and relationships. We seek to heal the wounds of childhood that interfere with living full and satisfying lives. We offer therapy for individuals, couples, and families.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) is a body-oriented talking therapy that integrates verbal techniques with body-centered interventions. SP was founded by Pat Ogden and refined by contributions from Alan Schore, Bessel van der Kolk, Onno van der Hart, Ellert Nijenhuis and Daniel Siegel. Its methods are based on a deep understanding of the effects of trauma on brain development and attachment systems.
This approach is based on the premise that human behavior and relationships are shaped by conscious and unconscious influences. Given that, at every point in therapy we are asking, What does it mean that this person, with their unique history and concerns, is doing or saying this particular thing at this time?
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an accelerated healing approach that was developed to deal with the effects of trauma. The theory behind EMDR is that when a traumatic or disturbing event occurs, the brain becomes overwhelmed and cannot digest the event as it would normal life events.
