In 1853, when Michigan was still very young, a farsighted citizen, Dr. Benajah Ticknor of Cobblestone Farm leased the triangle of land on which the school sits to the budding school district, for the purpose of building a school. The following year, the first Stone School opened its doors for students of the community.
However, by 1911, a half century later, the school was no longer adequate for the growing population. Members of the community rallied, tore down the small stone school and built the present larger Stone School House. Stones from the first school were saved and used in the newer building, along with additional stones from the neighboring farms of the Hutzels and Ticknors.

Services
A cooperative is a unique and rewarding experience for the entire family. Your child will get to experience a new space where they regularly interact with their teachers, children, and other parents. Parents get to play an active role in the operation of the school as well as in the classroom. As a cooperative, our families work together to build a joyful community based on play, love of learning, exploration, natural curiosity, and discovery.
We offer a play-based, child-centered preschool program. Our developmentally appropriate classes allow children the chance to play and learn together every day. We prepare children for Kindergarten and beyond, helping them learn both academic readiness skills, social skills including group behavior readiness skills, which are equally important for students to learn.
Rauchelle is a former SSCP parent and board member. Rauchelle relished her time at SSCP and is happy to be back to teach the three and four year olds! I found being involved in a community centered on our children to be rewarding and enriching. The sense of ownership and involvement are a wonderful aspect of being part of a co-op.

Stone School is an outstanding preschool. My son enjoyed every single moment there. The environment of this school is very nurturing, my son developed socially and gained lots of knowledge about letters, numbers and letters' sounds. Thanks Miss Rauchelle for your efforts and thanks to all moms who help in running this awesome place.

Two of my grandchildren were blessed to attend Stone School. The loving and supportive environment they experienced while at Stone School is a special memory for them and for me. When I stop by now to visit Miss Rauchelle, I am always greeted by her happy and exuberant students. It is a highlight of my day!

I have had 2 children at Stone School and we all have loved our experience. Families tend to form a good connection to the classroom and each other. Being a part of the classroom has helped me see my child in a different light. It has also set the standard in my family that parental involvement in education is a natural, important part of the process of going to school. Academics are worked into the curriculum with hands on activities in a play based setting. My children's first experience with school is that learning is fun!

What an amazing first school experience for my family. My three boys have enjoyed being part of such a great school. The family atmosphere surrounds the entire program. It was awesome to be involved and have a hands-on approach in my child's first school experience. The classes prepared my kids for kindergarten with having confidence, independence and social skills to move them forward in their education. Highly recommend if you are looking for a co-op. Something has to be said for a teacher staying at the same school for 25 years!
