Uncommon Therapy is the name of the private practice for Larry Moen, LPC, an Alaska state licensed professional counselor (therapist) serving the Fairbanks area. I have worked extensively and successfully with adults and children dealing with depression, anxiety disorders, relationship problems, PTSD (often including early childhood trauma), and unhelpful behaviors, among other mental health concerns.

I also have had more than the usual experience working with individuals with severe psychological issues including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and Asperger's Disorder. My work with children often includes helping them learn to deal with emotional processing, as well as emotional and behavioral management.
Services
We are located at 565 University Avenue, on (wheelchair accessible) ground level at the front of the building. Construction Update: You will need to access University Avenue via the University/Geist intersection. The University road closure will guide you to the BACK of the building and our parking area.
We normally start having insomnia because of stress or trauma, or concerns about a potential trauma. This gives us feelings such as anxiety, guilt or feeling overwhelmed.

Chronic anxiety, however, adds on additional feelings such as frustration over not sleeping, worry about how your bad sleep is affecting your life, and sometimes anger, helplessness, or shame over the lack of being able to take control of your sleep - and these are often what keeps your insomnia going or makes it worse.Chronic insomnia is a serious illness.
1 The website explains the logistics of my practice and much of my personal approach to counseling psychotherapy. I hope you find this useful and comprehensive, but if you have any unanswered questions please feel free to text me at (907) 388-8963 and I will try to answer them for you.

2 In addition to those parts of the website, the section titled "Classes and Articles" contains a great number of detailed discussions on various topics which I've written to help clients and students in my classes better understand many of the concepts I have found most helpful in providing therapy.
Unlike most other medical professions, in psychotherapy the physical environment where the therapy is done has a significant impact on the healing process. I understand the importance of providing patients with a warm, friendly and safe atmosphere -- and that's the environment I enjoy working in myself.
1 Mental health is just like physical health in that problems and illnesses in both are on a continuum of intensity. Just like with your physical health, there are the equivalents of mental health colds, flu, pneumonia, and cancers. There are also minor and major injuries, and some toxic exposures.
