Black Studios is just off Main Ave in beautiful Rutland, SD. Our studio building was originally a Lutheran country church. Built in 1892, it was moved into Rutland in 1947. We have the coolest space with 20 ft ceilings and room for large family groups or 40 or more. We do almost everything photographic: seniors and families, weddings and engagements to landscape and business/commercial photograph.
We even do schools and sports teams.

Services
Our family: Michael, Dacey and Rachel. We photograph weddings, seniors, sports, families, children, babies and engagements in eastern South Dakota. We live in beautiful Rutland SD. Our studio is just across the alley from our house, making for a very short commute.
While photography is a lifestyle onto itself, we do enjoy traveling (always with a camera), hiking in the Black Hills, biking on the country roads, long walks at Lake Herman and training for triathlons at the Community Center in Madison. In reality, our lives revolve our kids as we play taxi service hauling them to their activities.

Rachel's cheer team from Aberdeen Central won the Spirit of 6 Award during the Girls State AA Tournament in Brookings last weekend. I am one proud Dad. Here are a few images from Dacey. Dacey and I went down to Lake Brandt to check out the Ice Races in front of the Shipwreck Inn just north of Chester last Sunday.
Look who is coming for a visit this Summer! My friend Carmen is planning to come up from Iowa to collaborate on photography projects starting in the beginning of June. Carmen is a graduate of Hawkeye with a degree in photography. She has past production experience in a professional lab and she has her own photography business in eastern Iowa.
We download images to our laptop as the day progresses. As a benefit, we can see right away if something has gone wrong with a camera or if we are missing any essential shots. Unlike the days of film when you had to wait for the pictures to come back from the lab, we know that we have the images we want and they are good.

Terrible. They used to do a fantastic job and were great several years ago. However, within the last year, service and quality both declined significantly. We were doing the baby package for one of my children, which means a picture every 3 months. And for the better half of these, it took about 2 1/2 months to get the pictures from a previous session! Every time I would call to ask about them, I'd get the "having issues at the lab" excuse. After awhile, they screened their phone calls and stopped answering my calls. Because if I'd call from a different number, they would

HORRIBLE experience! I can't believe I wasted my time and money with these two people. Their "studio" is a filthy old church... Food wrappers everywhere, a dog running around, piles of backdrops wadded up on the floor (gross), nasty furniture that I was afraid to sit on because of all the dirt and hair, it was DISGUSTING! I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I made an appointment for my daughters newborn portraits there, I should've RAN the other way when I walked in and saw the place. It was all downhill from there.
Not only was it outrageously expensive
