Founded by a United Methodist minister who felt called to help the poor of the world and saw a need for enabling volunteers in mission, the Friends of Barnabas Foundation began helping those in need in 2000 under the direction of its founder, Reverend Linwood Cook. During the inaugural years, Reverend Cook and his son Matt laid the foundation for the organization which exists today.

From simple mission trips to dispense Vitamin A and anti-parasite medications to children, the trips expanded to include general medicine, eye, and dental clinics to the poor communities in the remote mountain regions of central Honduras.
Services
Friends of Barnabas' programs come directly out of our mission to help vulnerable children in Honduras. Improving a child's life for the long term must include strengthening that child's community, so that it may better support her. FOB programs address many components of the Honduran health care system, from community based initiatives to system wide endeavors.
The Extended Care Program was developed for children whose medical needs go beyond care provided by field clinics. Children referred to this program suffer from cardiac defects, neurological disorders, cleft lip and cleft palates, clubfoot, and other defects and illnesses. Care is provided through FOB's Barnabas House and also through a network of partner organizations.
FOB's Early Childhood Development Program is centered on the education of developmental delays, the use of screening tools in communities, and the value of practical therapy methods. Studies show that the stress of poverty is a risk factor for poor brain development, and early intervention can be a child's best chance to thrive.
The Little Hearts Project (LHP) is a comprehensive pediatric cardiac project created in partnership with local Honduran hospitals and health care providers. FOB worked to establish the project for more than a decade with the support of yearly screening teams as well as interventional and surgical teams and by training the first, formally trained, pediatric cardiovascular surgeon in Honduras, Dr. Victor Paz.
Volunteers with specialized backgrounds and experience provide continuing education for our staff as well as community leaders and midwives. Rotarians are provided with an opportunity to see how Rotary Projects and Friends Of Barnabas are changing lives in Honduras.

During this trip Rotarians will visit the FOB facilities, The Little Hearts Project at Ruth Paz Hospital, one of the mountain villages that FOB serves, and they will meet with fellow Rotarians from Honduras.
