Develops character traits such as honesty, courage, loyalty, compassion, confidence, respect for self, respect for others, and strong leadership skills.
The following is an excerpt from my biography in the AAMA "2016 Who's Who in the Martial Arts". At age 15 I was smaller than many of my peers. My nickname was "Shrimp". I didn't like idea of the older neighborhood kids pushing me around. I saw my friend, Keith, at school during gym class doing some movements I didn't recognize.

It is not the fanciest dojo around but the instructors are very patient with the young children yet still maintain discipline. They focus on technique through which focus and discipline are taught.
