I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan playing sports, spending time with friends and being a teenager. My first camera (35mm Leica) and dark room film set-up came from my father. I took classes in high school, led the Photography club, read photography books, etc. I knew Photography was a part of me. After academic twists and turns, I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Communications.
Even everyday portraits can be creative and fun. I try to capture personalities and not just smiles with my portraits. At Alan Simpson Photography, we consult with our clients about what kind of concept they want with their portrait. Sometimes the portrait is straight forward, sometimes more subtle.
Fashion photography is really fun. It is like general portraiture except that the client is unnaturally good looking. Fashion is a rapidly changing genre with the photography concepts different all the time. I like to photograph models, bloggers and opinion shapers of all ages and experience. Let's shoot in the city, in a japanese garden, in an abandoned movie theater, under a bridge.
Dance Photography is my first love. Whether it is a fun portrait of young twin sisters posing in their leotards or a dramatic shot of a ballerina leaping across the stage, I love the grace and beauty of dance. Costumes make a big part of the image when I shoot a live dance show. The craft of the lighting designers adds to my work as the splashes of colors the lights cast on the stage are captured in my dance images.
