The National Holistic Institute started in a house on College Avenue in Oakland, California in 1979. After several years of informally studying massage therapy with different mentors, original NHI founder, Carol Carpenter, had a vision to build a massage therapy school dedicated to training professional massage therapists.
What we share here at NHI is so much more than the practice of massage therapy. It's really about discovering the potential you have within you and learning to share that in the unique way that only you can do.
NHI Emeryville is the flagship campus, located in a quaint neighborhood filled with businesses and homes, old warehouses converted into lofts and offices, lots of quality restaurants and cafes, beautiful parks on nearly every block, and a community garden just across the street from our main entrance.During lunch time, food trucks line the street at a grassy park just one block away, and a few sometimes even come right to campus.

I found National Holistic Institute just scrolling through the FB. My first contact was with a wonderful person while picking up my supplies, and they set a very warm and inviting tone. Although we started online because of the pandemic, the teacher was very warm, and seemed like he liked his job. The students all seemed like people I could get to like. Then, when we came to the first in person class, the campus manager came and set an absolutely wonderful energy going and really made this whole thing seem real. It was early in the pandemic that I decided to attend NHI. Everything was online at that point, and honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from learning a hands on modality without a hands on experience. But, I can tell you with a full heart, that it was the BEST choice I could have made, and my experience went above and beyond anything I could have expected.
Each and every teacher gave 110% to help us digest the content, and get a deep understanding for both the physical techniques and the intention behind the techniques that turn the mechanical into something truly holistic and healing.

Since attending NHI, I Have learned more about the importance of how are muscles play a big part in how are body moves, and how we feel on a day to day emotionally drive. I know see how I can give back to my community and help those with just a simple massage. I feel more confident knowing how I can help with those in need.

Being at NHI has been a tremendous opportunity to enhance my massage therapy skills. The content and modules have allowed my knowledge of the field to grow in ways I didn’t know were possible! As a blind individual from Camden, New Jersey, I learned about this amazing hands-on learning opportunity and moved to Oakland to pursue my passion which is Massage Therapy so I could advance in the field. Visiting NHI was amazing! I was blown away by the warm and friendly staff, the clean and inviting space, as well as the active and engaged students. The campus location and scenery is very peaceful. NHI has been such a great experience for me. It was a strange learning massage therapy in the middle of a pandemic, but ultimately helped me get through some challenging times. Learning online is always a challenge, but all of the instructors and staff are very supportive and good at finding fun and inventive ways to teach the material. They are also great at making sure to meet different learning needs, and encourage students to use different methods of studying or reach out for any additional help.

I have had a very positive experience so far at NHI. All the staff has been very personable, and helpful. My mentoring teacher Mrs. Mendiola Flores & Mrs. Allen have been gems in providing my group with support and the education I came to receive. The group of students that I am a part of have also been welcoming & helpful. I had been looking into NHI for the past 2 years, and almost went to another school in Davis CA. The Davis program was not as in depth, they didn't even respond to my inquiries.

This was my first visit to the NHI’s Student massage clinic and it was a very enjoyable experience from start to finish. I like that I was able to make my appointment online. I qualified for an incredible rate for a 50-minute Shiatsu/Swedish massage. The amount I paid guarantees I will be a repeat customer. They don’t accept tips but do request detailed feedback.
