Master Starnes began his Taekwondo journey at the very early age of 4 years old. As a late teen, he knew that spreading the goodness of Taekwondo was something that he was very passionate about and wanted to do for the rest of his life. After training under multiple Masters and Grand Masters, his Taekwondo education took him to Korea where he lived, studied, and re-learned the fundamentals of this art.
But the good news is that right now, you have the chance of a lifetime to discover a simple AND easy way to completely turn around your child's behavior. And I don't mean by using harsh discipline or bribery. This solution will not only improve behavior, it will instill a sense of self-discipline and respect.
The children's program is designed to keep our students active and healthy, and away from video games and electronics! Throughout the classes, you can expect your children to learn Taekwondo techniques combined with traditional martial arts philosophy. They learn the importance of disciple, respect, and goal setting, which will help them build a foundation for a successful life.

Spirit Taekwondo is the best martial arts studio in NYC hands down for anyone that is genuinely interested in learning taekwondo. The instructors are caring, inviting and they all ensure that the students are engaged and feel supported. Master Starnes is a true practitioner of martial arts and has devoted his life to teaching taekwondo to anyone that is willing to learn. I studied taekwondo under Master Starnes for years and now my 9 year old son is studying under him as well. He absolutely loves the classes! The lessons are fun but challenging and there's promotion tests and tournaments

Spirit Taekwondo is great my son loves going, they teach dicipline, respect, confidence. They encourage to always do your best(to do better)They have seminars about bullying prevention, prepare for school. I strongly recommend Spirit Taekwondo!

Year long contract at around $1,900 per child is the membership option and is paid in installments. We paid in full so it was $1,500ish. I do not suggest doing that. That’s quite a bit of money for the average person to fork over per child.. especially in today’s economic climate.
They have a really cheap/free class and shirt deal and after that class you’re taken into the sales office and offered the above. Payments must be made only in cash or check and there are no refunds, credits, etc.
I believe the uniform was $140, boards at $3 each for days they do board breaking and belt tests

I signed my daughter up for this school prior to the pandemic bases on positive reviews. However, since then the pandemic hit. They continued to charge my card for classes that she has not gotten although they were shut down. Discussion to stop the charge were met with "no, we have a business to run but when things get better she will get her classes". 2 years later my child has not received the 60 classes owed in the package and they will not return my call about working something out. If you are serious about practicing martial arts, this is a good place for it. Although its expensive, Spirits traditional method of training strives to maintain and share the age old secrets of Taekwondo. You get what you pay for. Also, training is what YOU make of it.
If I had to complain: My 3 kids, wife and I have been members for the last 2 years. The schedule is a bit rigid and only offer 3 adult classes a week. Additionally, the personal touch is hit or miss depending on the class size.
All in all, you can clearly tell that the Master instructor is passionate about what he does. They promote

My son Mateo absolutely loves Spirit Taekwondo! My wife and I were desperate to find something active for our son to do and we were so glad that he's taken to martial arts. The instructors are so patient, friendly, communicative, and really do their best to encourage each student to try their best. Spirit Taekwondo instills all of the qualities/traits we as parents want to teach our children. My son has gained discipline, built confidence, increased his understanding of respect, has learned to act with integrity all while learning self-defense and staying active.

Our 3 year old daughter really enjoys coming to classes. She had a hard time in the beginning being alone inside the classroom but the team at Spirit Taekwondo helped her get through her fear and took extra time before classes to help her adjust. Now she asks to go to class everyday. She is learning to be more independent, and social on top of learning discipline and self defense. The classes teach kids in a fun way that keeps them engaged and active. The instructors are great with the kids and have the compassion and patience that is required to teach toddlers. Spirit Taekwondo has a lot to offer. They have a flexibile class schedule, which I appreciate. They offer different "teams" or classes to go along with kids taekwondo goals. In addition to classes they build community for their members through parties (which the kids love), camps, promotion celebrations, workshops, tournaments, and family classes. They have high expectations, but work with each student within his or her ability range, always accepting a student where he or she is at but pushing them to go one step further. Over time each of those one steps adds up.

My kids have been training with Spirit Taekwondo for almost 2 years now and I am very pleased with the type of work that the instructors do with the youth. It is not only about climbing the belt ladder, but even more so about training their character. The virtues of persevering, being honest and always giving YOUR best are instilled and stressed. The instructors set a great example themselves by being always courteous, helpful and truly caring. There have been issues along the way (as in any relationship...), but they were willingly resolved once brought to the management's attention. Great

My son has been a student at Spirit Taekwondo since January and the experience has been absolutely positive. The instructors are very professional, organized and supportive of the students. We looked at a few schools before choosing Spirit Taekwondo and we have not been disappointed. The school does a great job at maintaining a good student/instructor ratio. Our kids always enjoy coming to class. And i enjoy watching them learn, get physically fit, and push themselfs to go beyond each time. Outside of classes, the well organized, family friendly activities are a joy to attend. Super flexible schedule allows for anyone to join. Always amazed by each instructors ability to remember each student (from day 1). Lovely to see their always friendly faces. I highly recommend.

My daughter has been taking lessons here since April '11, and really enjoys it. She's almost 5 now. Master Starnes and the instructors really care about the students, and it shows. As the previous post stated, it is a little expensive. But, all extracurricular activities are!!! Dance lessons, music lessons, sports teams... are all a little expensive. In my opinion, this school is an investment in my child. I also pay tuition to send her to catholic school. In my opinion, that's another investment.

My son has been in this school for 7 months and he loves it. The instructors are always attentive and supportive. They take what they do seriously and that is very important, you don't want to pay for your children not learning anything from the experience, my son enjoys his classes n feels part of the team, he also feels comfortable to ask when he as a question or doubt.
