Services
Wheeler Mortuary was established in 1924 by E. N. Wheeler to serve Portales and Roosevelt County with quality funeral service. In 1926, his son, E. N. Wheeler, Jr. joined his father in the operation of the firm. In 1935, they built a new facility at the current location which at that time was the corner of Union and Ohio streets.
Scott has been a member of the staff of Wheeler Mortuary since 1968, when he was still in college. He holds degrees from E.N.M.U. and Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science, and has been licensed by the State of New Mexico since 1973. With more than 40 years in funeral service, Scott is able to assist families with compassionate and knowledgeable help in their time of need.
At Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, Inc., we take great pride in caring for our families, and will work tirelessly to provide you with a beautiful, lasting tribute to your loved one. We just lost my mother-in-law and my father-in-law about 2 months apart (Sept 2021 and Nov. 2021).We were obviously devastated, but Scott Reeves and his staff at Wheeler Mortuary made everything smooth and easy. He took care of everything and held our hands through the whole process. He worked with the families to plan and execute both memorial services and cremation arrangements. Wheeler not only 'live streamed' the services, but posted them on their website for others to watch who couldn't make the services. Their professionalism and caring attitude were a breath of fresh air during a very difficult

I would definitely choose Wheeler Mortuary for anyone who has experienced an unexpected death in their family. The funeral director I dealt with a lot of the time was Scott and he went out of his way to help my family do the best we could to get through this most terrible thing in our lives. The cost of the funeral was actually about what I expected yet a lot less then I had expected. The way they work with you hand in hand is just comforting in so many ways. There attention to detail was amazing! They gave us options and with the state I was in not a lot made much sense, scott went way above and

Wheeler Mortuary is just another Example of what a money machine the funeral home industry is. My brother was killed in a tragic accident and was taken to this mortuary. We elected to have him cremated so all the funeral home did was transport the body and keep it in refrigeration. For this we were charged $2000. This was a flat feet and there was no itemized inventory of the services rendered for the $2000. It did not include the actual cost of cremation. As a public service announcement I would like everyone to know that if you or your loved one desire cremation at the end of your life you

While I have not compared prices to other mortuaries, I can say that Wheeler Mortuary has served our family's needs in very difficult times since 1960. Our deceased family member was treated with dignity. From Ernest Wheeler through the years to Scott Reeves, we have received excellent service. Our family can rely on excellent service.

Monopoly takes a toll on customer service.
We visited Wheeler Mortuary in Portales, NM on 4/20/18 due to my mother's death. We met the owner, Mr. Scott P. Reeves. He asked us what we wanted to do. He did not show us a list of services available or the logistics. In a hurry, Mr. Reeves asked us for the full names of the surviving family. We told Mr. Reeves that we had opted for cremation. I asked if it would be at Wheeler's Mortuary and what was the method. With short answers, he looked annoyed by my question. He responded that he uses Clovis, NM's facilities and by fire. He withheld
