Services
Volute Engineering was founded in an empty office, in 1990, with small amount of capital and some second hand office furniture. The company's initial business was consulting engineering and the design and build of custom machines. Very early on, it became apparent that sub-contracting machine shop work yielded inconsistent quality and constant delays.
Volute's machine & fabrication shop is set up for short runs and one-of-a-kind items. We are a craft based custom shop, of top quality, and do not operate in the mass production job shop market. We work in all materials commonly used in industry, including structural steel, stainless steel, tool steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, plastics, etc.
Volute designs and builds custom machines, processes, and factory automation equipment. Our primary machine specialty is one-of-a-kind, prototype, experimental, unique, replica, and modern substitutes for obsolete equipment.
We have built packaging machinery, chemical processing equipment, paper converting machines, food processing equipment, pilot plant prototypes, custom air presses, inspection equipment, research and development projects, metal processing machinery, plastics, assembly machines and composite material machines, scientific equipment, test equipment, and much more.

Volute is very skilled and experienced at industrial maintenance and repairs. We rebuild and repair a large variety machines, structures and control systems, for a diverse range of industries. We are a general purpose industrial shop that services both mechanical and electrical systems. Our machine shop is optimized for repairs, and the small job quantities common for spare parts.
Volute has experienced craftsmen capable of making parts entirely by hand, using both modern and original methods. For example, we might blacksmith up a part, finish it with a file, but then use modern TIG welder to attach it. This allows us to make parts that are generally unavailable in the modern, computerized, world.

I have worked with Volute Engineering on & off for the past 20 years and I have a few observations:
Boyce is able to work within a cost constraint. He's very good at sizing up a problem, and providing a few options at varying levels of cost and complexity so a customer can choose a solution.
He is also very aware of how things wear and ultimately fail. As such, he designs his machines to be very maintenance-friendly. He uses commercial parts wherever possible, and makes the wear parts very accessible. He has seen a lot in his many years of practice across a wide variety of industries - everything

Our relationship with Volute Engineering goes back to the early 90's. We have called upon Boyce and his team dozens of times to perform difficult, technical builds and simple maintenance. My company, which uses a variety of large (150 - 200 HP) mixing and blending equipment as well as smaller and more intricate consumer goods packaging machinery, has been involved with Volute Engineering for 15+ years. Volute has successfully redesigned troublesome aspects of several large rotating equipment components extending their life from a matter of months to years, saving us many thousands of dollars.
