St. James Preschool has been continuously owned and operated by St. James Episcopal Church since 1965. Over the years, our program has grown and expanded to meet the ever-changing needs of today's preschoolers in the Downingtown, as well as, Chester Springs, Coatesville, Exton and West Chester areas.

St. James Preschool is non-denominational and accepts children of all backgrounds. Though we are operated by St. James Episcopal Church, our curriculum does not include religious education. We do, however, offer a prayer of thanksgiving at snack time. We have a warm, mature staff consisting of five teachers and five assistants.
Services
We believe that the time before kindergarten is an important opportunity to provide developmental learning experiences for children. Our program provides an environment that encourages social, emotional and intellectual growth. In a warm and gentle atmosphere, we help ease the transition from home to a school environment.
Preschool is a period of transition for your child from the narrow boundaries of his/her home and immediate family to the broader world of school and community. Throughout this academic year, we will help your child to acquire the ability to work and play cooperatively; to follow instructions; to get along with other children; to respect and obey his/her teachers; and to adapt to separation from home and becoming happy in a new environment.
Our goal is to create a warm and happy place for preschoolers to learn. As we bridge the gap between home and school, we guide children to a continued good self-image while building social skills in a school setting. Sensory, motor, perceptual and language skills are introduced through materials and activities that are both child-centered and teacher-directed.
Children develop best in an environment that allows them to interact with other children, make discoveries, solve problems and think independently. With our "hands on" approach through learning centers, children learn and explore in both large group and small group activities. Our focus is to reinforce and build upon previously learned concepts, as well as work on readiness skills needed for Kindergarten.
The success of our program is due mainly to the tremendous support we receive from our parents. They help with fundraisers, field trips and assist with special projects. We are fortunate and unique to have a very active preschool Parent-Teacher Organization. It is with their help that we are able to offer the "extras" to our program.
