Our company was founded by Joe Spiegelglass in 1904. At first, it was a one-man operation - a carpenter with a push cart whose work primarily included repair work for the storefronts in downtown St. Louis. Before the days of e-mail or cell phones, clients knew they could reach Joe when they needed him, and he would be there to help with their construction needs - thinking through a challenge, completing a project or solving a problem.
That commitment to his clients was the foundational element that allowed his business to flourish - not only did his clients come back each time they needed help, they recommended Joe to their friends. And word spread. As retail grew in the city during the 1930s, the department stores became larger, and Joe found he needed additional help to keep up with the requests coming in.

Explore our work and discover how we deliver successful projects again and again. Our small and medium-sized commercial construction expertise spans numerous industries, and we build throughout the Midwest region. Here are some featured projects from St. Louis and Kansas City. St. Louis is the hometown of Shake Shack's founder, Danny Meyer, so the first St. Louis location in particular was a meaningful one for the company.
Restaurant Construction is a commercial construction category on its own. Building a restaurant is a complex process, and if you are looking to go down that path, you'll want to search for a commercial general contractor that is experienced in building restaurants specifically. The company's owners have also served as guest lecturers at culinary schools to help future restaurant owners understand what goes into building a restaurant.
There are unique skillsets associated with retail construction, including carefully synchronizing installation schedules and maintaining a focus on maximizing sales per square foot; clients need a general contractor that can negotiate with landlords, provide a realistic timeline, ensure proper lighting and much more.
