She graduated from St. Angela's Academy in 1954. Rose then worked at A&W as a car hop. Nine children were born to this union. Rose and Jimmie then lived in Charles City and Tama. In 1955, they moved to Bayard where Jimmie established McAlister Parts & Equipment and Rose worked as a stay-at-home mom.

He grew up on a rural Manilla, Iowa farm, attended country school and graduated in 1962 from Glidden-Ralston High School. Following graduation, he lived in Omaha and Elkhorn, Nebraska where he was a lineman and construction supervisor for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. In June of 1969, Paul was introduced to Vicki Petersen by his dad, who had been admitted to the Harlan Hospital following a tragic accident.

He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton. He graduated from Audubon High School with the class of 1963. To this union, three children were born: Amy, Jerod and Corey. They made their home in Elk Horn, Iowa. Don worked at Western Iowa Pork Plant in Harlan, Iowa, farmed and raised hogs.
