You can begin the quick application process below or learn more about our account types and requirements. Membership open to those who live, work, worship, own a business, or attend school in Washoe County. A minimum $25 is required in savings for the life of your account; this is your share of ownership in the credit union.
An overdraft happens when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction. Whether you have an emergency expense or a human error, it can be inconvenient, embarrassing, and costly. Great Basin offers multiple ways to protect your checking account from overdrafts. We will COVER debit card transactions, checks, bill pays, or ACH transactions even if there isn't enough money available in your account (up to a $500 total limit).
Direct deposit is the electronic transfer of your paycheck, Social Security benefit, pension, annuity check, or other payment into your account. Your entire paycheck can be automatically credited toward any combination of your Great Basin Federal Credit Union accounts/shares each pay period. Direct deposit increases the safety and convenience of processing your check, eliminates waiting in payday lines, and makes your funds instantly available.
We have a full range of IRA products available, from Passbooks to Certificates, Traditional to Roth. We can even help you move your existing retirement so you can keep it all in one place. We often recommend that you meet with a financial professional about your retirement funds, and it just so happens we have a no-cost, no-obligation Financial Consultant on site.
Monthly Qualifications Include: (1) Have at least 15 debit card purchases post and settle, (2) Have at least 1 automatic payment (ACH) or direct deposit or bill pay transaction post and settle, and (3) Be enrolled in eStatements. Limit 1 Rewards Checking per primary member Social Security Number. There are no recurring monthly service charges or fees to open or close this account.

Nice employees, but TERRIBLE place to bank. ZERO after-hours customer service and they will decline every single EMERGENCY small loan request....you could be losing a limb and need emergency surgery, but they're like, "Ohhhh, we're so sorry to hear that.........DECLINED!"
I have two credit accounts with them that I have NEVER paid late on, yet they still decline my loan requests. At one point, they said I needed a co-signer...then, they said I basically needed a co-signer for my co-signer (what???)...then they STILL denied me, even though one of the applicants had an almost 700 fico and the other

This credit union usually holds my money for 3 days every time I get my paycheck on a direct deposit,,, I used to have it with Mountain America credit union they usually holds my checks for 1 day but today I call them because I saw IRS putting my money on Friday I thought I was going to have my money by Monday but they told me that I have to wait another 3 days 😓 crazy
The customer service lady tried to tell me that it was the IRS holding the money so I told her that was not true at all they usually do this to me every time I get my direct deposit money from work or checks,,, holding my money

This is the best credit union ever, with amazing employees. Whenever i call, they are super friendly. It's like having a friend in banking. The worst credit union is United Federal I used to have a savings account there. However, I was greatly annoyed by the $7.00 inactivity fee. How can anyone SAVE money if you are taking away $7.00? I called on 03/31/20 to object to the fee and I asked to have it reversed. I spoke to Kelly. Kelly seemed not to be in a good mood. She was a little testy. She did reverse the fee (2x) which was what I wanted. But then she informed me that I would not be able to have

This credit union is horrible. Today, I went inside to cash a check. Mind you, this is a puny $4000/$300 check. After profiling me (i was slumming it) and making me wait fifteen minutes while they verify the checks are real...First the teller tells me that I cannot cash a check that their member wrote to my name. After I very nicely call the BS, THEY TELL ME THAT THERE IS A $5 fee for each check to be cashed by a non member. The manager said all banking institutions have this bogus fee. My three banks do not have them. This is the south virginia bank by winco.

I have been a member since the 70's (?) when you were located in Greenbrae Shopping Center and were name NevTel! I have always appreciated the caring attitude and services rendered since I first joined. I used GBFCU for our direct deposit payroll when I was the business manager at Reno Dental Associates and always had excellent service.

Individual attention is superb. I will note that if you want to open a new account, please get there before 4 pm. I use the South Virginia Branch. One day, years ago, the website wouldn't let me in and I needed to transfer some money after hours so that the checks I had written would not bounce. I went to the branch, slid a note under the door with what I needed, and got a call first thing in the morning to take care of it. That's customer service! (But their CD rates are terrible at the moment!)

I wanted to activate my debit card and had lost the sticker on the front of the card. When I called I spoke with Lisa to ask for the number to call she told me to search through my garbage at home to find the sticker. How rude and unprofessional. This employee definitely needs more customer service training. Only when I asked to speak with a manager I was put on hold and she magically found the number.
