At SMA Dental, we take the time to provide each of our patients with a thorough and comprehensive initial exam. This includes a review of medical and dental history, an oral exam, checking head and neck muscles as well as TMJ, and performing oral cancer and sleep apnea screenings. We evaluate the bite, jaw movements and the health of teeth and gums, and take intraoral and extraoral photos so patients can see what we see.

I've been going here for a few years and will not go back ever again. After missing an apt and getting a bill for $350, they said if I came in, they'd erase the debt. I went in again, and they refused. After asking for the Dr to call me back and them assuring me he would, he never did.
Generally speaking, this place feels like a racket. Terrible way to run a business.

I have been going to this dental office for most of my life, and when Dr. Schmotter's partner (Dr. Joe Armel) retired, I lost a wonderful dentist and a good friend. Although I have absolute trust in Dr. Armel's decisions, I was skeptical about having a new dentist, even though I knew Dr. Armel spent a great deal of time finding just the right folks. Been going to Dr. Schmotter for years now and even though I am not in the neighborhood I continue to drive to see him. Dr. Schmotter has volunteered his time on many humanitarian trips to help those in need and that is just the kind of person he is and his staff follow the lead.

In addition to the top notch dental skills, these people are seriously nice & have great customer service. I chipped a tooth just hours before a flight to NYC for work. It would have really bugged me to live with it for a week on the road. I "walked in" and not only did they help me, but they were so kind about it. In general, very clean and competent over the years - but I'm thankful to say, also, nice people!!

The new doctor here replacing Dr Armell is Dr Marin. Dr Marin does indeed have impeccable technique. Dr Marin However is from my perspective close to obsessed with not prescribing pain pills and limiting the nitrous oxide. After doing a root canal and prescribing Clindamycin for what he described as a "significant infection" Dr Marin lectured me in person and over the phone in reference to his thinking about my not needing any pain medication. I am fully aware of the current opioid epidemic but at age 70 I also believe that if I were going to develop a dependency it would have happened

Dr. Richard Schmotter's office is very inviting, modern, and comfortable. The staff is totally terrific. They do not make you feel bad because you didn't quite floss enough. One sign of knowing that it is a terrific dentist is that the people who work there have been there 30 years, if they are old enough.

Dr. Schmotter did a bridge for my daughter 8 years ago that bothered her for years. She kept going back to Schmotter but it was never right. She recently went to a young dentist and had it fixed. I kept going as he had been my Dentist for over 30 years. But recently I also had a problem. He filed my tooth so short that he just left a stub which cracked. Now I have to get a bridge. I will NEVER go back!!! I will be looking for a younger Dentist (maybe my daughter's) who will be more familiar with new techniques.

Went in Only for consultation because other dentist messed up. Dr Schmotter took the time to listen and then make great advise. That was all I wanted BUT he went ahead and corrected the problem then and there. I left completely satisfied and he did not charge me because I came in only for consultation and he did not want to see me in any more discomfort. Looks like I now have to change dentist.

I have really enjoyed seeing Dr. Schmotter and staff. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. I have been there for my two kids, ages 12 and 14, and myself. The hygenist did a great job and even remembered me the next time I came in.
My daughter needed some cosmetic work on a tooth and Dr. Schmotter patiently went through the options and was favoring the more economical one just to save us money.
He is very gentle and trustworthy, plus it's reasonably easy to get an appointment, at least until the yelpers find out about him!

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this dentist. I first wound up in his chair after having a bogus diagnosis - this was over 12 years ago. He was SO ethical. Dr. Schmotter has been my dentist since 1986, when I relocated from Aspen, CO to Marin. I was referred to Doctor Schmotter by my former dentist in Aspen, CO when I inquired about dentists in Marin. I was lucky to find out that Doctor Schmotter had moved from Aspen in the mid 80s and had opened a dental practice in Marin. He is a very skilled dentist and does the highest quality work. His crown work is perfect. He is a salt of the earth kind of person, and he will do what is best for you. Dr. Schmotter is by far the best dentist I have ever been too. He is incredibly knowledgeable, but what makes him different from other dentists is his honesty; he wont convince you to get work done that you don't really need done. If you do need the work done, he is great at explaining exactly what needs to be done and the different options and costs. (My previous dentist would tell me that I needed everything done, which was not necessarily the case).
The office is clean and pleasant and the staff are very friendly. I highly recommend Dr. Schmotter to anybody seeking a great dentist

A friend referred me to Dr Schmotter least 15 years ago and over the years, I found him to be very honest, knowledgeable and highly competent. Had what will probably be my only two crowns ever done this year - I have blessedly good teeth - and it was handled professionally and my new crowns fit well and felt like they had been there for ages in a very short time. Dr Schmotter's extensive experience inspires confidence in his patients and staff. Can't recommend him highly enough, just worried he'll retire someday!

Dr. Schmotter is my long time dentist, and I want to highly recommend him! I have been going to him for about 12 years, and switched to him when I needed two dental implants. A former dentist, who didn't perform dental implants, disparaged implants and had tried to talk me into getting bridges - which I did not want. Dr. Schmotter perfomed the operation superbly - and over 11 years later I am still extremely happy that I held out for the implants - which are so good that I actually occaisionally forget that I have them - I will feel them with my tongue and think - hum - my tooth is numb
