Clay Selland founded Signet Mortgage Corporation in 2002. Clay holds a real estate broker's license and is a Certified Public Accountant (California). He began his financial career as a CPA with a national CPA firm, and has held senior finance and strategy roles with Longs Drug Stores, Cost Plus World Market and several other start-up retailers.

The HECM reverse mortgage program continues to evolve and adjust to ensure it will meet the needs of Seniors in their retirement. The upfront mortgage insurance is now 2% for all loans, and the annual mortgage insurance on outstanding balances is reduced to 0.500%. The mortgage insurance benefits the homeowner in the event the loan balance at payoff were to be more than the future value of the home.

I used Clay and Signet Mortgage for the refi of my home during the crazy Covid-19 times where most lenders had more stringent underwriting. A couple lenders were very backlogged plus had idiosyncratic underwriting demands which proved to be very frustrating.

Clay at Signet is an amazing partner to work with. He is calm, candid, funny and very knowledgeable about structuring loans (from a timing, rate and tax perspective) and understands the current market. Clay responds to emails promptly and returns calls timely (which is important when you have 30 days to close). We've worked with the big banks previously and prefer working with Clay and his team. We used Signet Mortgage and Clay for a reverse mortgage (HECM). The process went great and I have no complaints. I found Clay through the Mortgage Professor.com list of "kosher" brokers (although I just noticed that mtgprofessor.com now sells their own products). He was good to work with, monitored rates/conditions for the best timing. He is very good at explaining complicated products like a reverse mortgage.

Long overdue, but Clay pulled off a miracle. I was in the process of getting divorced, selling my house, buying my ex out of the business and i needed a place to live. The place we found was a foreclosure that had no flooring.
Clay patiently pushed everything through, help my hand, found solutions and it was relatively painless (compared to the rest of the drama). Will use them again when I'm ready for the refi!

Do not work for Clay! He is abusive and will slowly gaslight you over time. He fired three employees that I know of before I worked there. He fired a processor while I was there. I have never seen someone at work come to actual tears and this lady did on three occasions. He kept her on and interviewed a few replacements in front of her. It was very awkward to experience. He would yell at us while one the phone. He wouldn't allow us to send our own emails without first reviewing a "draft". He would put us all down and create mistakes from our work that were not mistakes. He lied about

I recently had the pleasure of working with Clay and the Signet team to purchase a property out of state. I really wanted to like Signet Mortgage, and things looked good when we went to refinance our mortgage with them in March of 2012, but the process turned out to be a disaster, costing me over $400 in home appraisal fees that ended up going to waste.
The lender Clay selected put us through over two months of unexpected delays, and the only communications we received regularly from the Signet Mortgage office during that time were requests for more personal information, without adequate updating on what was going on with the lender. Clay handled our home purchase in 2008. As first-time home buyers it was very important that we used someone who was willing to explain the process, know their stuff, and care about our case. The Signet team did all of that and more.
