Since 1973, Tiger's Claw Martial Arts has been providing expert instruction for children & adults in Isshin-Ryu Karate, Self-defense, and the Martial Arts. Our Hillsdale, NJ school was opened in 1999 by husband and wife team Professor Ronald Allan Mertz and Master Maureen Mertz.
Our Black Belt staff is highly trained and proficient with over 140 years of combined training under the direct supervision of Professor Ronald Allen Mertz, 10th Degree Black Belt.We are proud that our school and instructors have won many awards including the American Isshin-Ryu Dojo of the Year, Platinum Lifetime Achievement Award and Isshin-Ryu Children's Instructor of the Year.

Our Instructors have spent many years devoted to training in the art of Karate and other martial arts and have attained a certain level of expertise to qualify them as teachers and also mentors. Through extensive testing, certification and tournament level competition, our staff has attained mastery in this martial art and now enjoy sharing their skill and passing it on to their students.
Students and enthusiasts of Karate have many reasons for their interest in this and other martial art styles. Some are drawn to the physical fitness and weight-loss aspects of training. Others seek to add discipline and self control to their lives. While still others are concerned about safety and self-defense.
In 1999 Master Maureen Mertz founded the award-winning Little Tigers program. She was honored with the Isshin-Ryu Children's Instructor of the Year in 2005 and the Isshin-Ryu Founders Award in 2006. Our Little Tigers are introduced to the basics of our Isshin-Ryu Karate system while improving learning and motor skills.
The Tiger Commando Fighting System is an American self-defense survival system. The roots are from Isshin- Ryu Karate, the self-defense is from elite police programs and the weapons defense training is from commando units stationed around the world. Its founder is Grand Master Richard J. Mrofka. Professor Mertz studied directly with Grand Master Mrofka.

Our daughter started taking classes back in Sept and we can’t say enough amazing things about Tiger Claw and the amazing staff. The minute you walk in they make you feel welcomed. Our daughter looks forward to class every week!! The dojo is very clean and there is a great space for you to sit and watch as your kid takes their class.

You're an adult looking for a Karate school or teen looks like an adult I would not recommend This school judge mental people They do not like you look like are you they will think of a false allegation to put against you . If do not like your Skills They went complain to the owner using the Law The owner will tell you To terminate the relationship with the school Instead of hearing both sides of the story He will take Word of the outside Stead of the student or Parent . I do not recommend this adult your teen good luck . Ps my martial artist myself .
