UCSF School of Medicine trained physician Tye dePena MD, is the owner of Santa Cruz Med Spa. He was board certified at UCSF, and has trained in Aesthetic Medicine since 1999. He sees patients weekly, and supervises all treatments. Judy Monihan PA assists treatments with over 10 years of experience owning her own skin care company Bella Tu.

Buyer beware! SERIOUSLY!
Every Botox practitioner should ask their client if they have an infection anywhere in their body. If you do, DO NOT HAVE BOTOX.
I didn't know I had an infection under one of my molars and my mouth exploded. I got Botulism. It was not fun! Botox can be POISONOUS if you have an infection.
Get your teeth checked before to make sure.

Update: I've become so comfortable at Santa Cruz Med Spa and so happy with the results from my tattoo removals (Dr. de Pena is now rapidly removing several of my tattoos) I couldn't imagine going anywhere else when I decided I wanted to try dermal filler. I was really nervous at the idea of injectables, and I'm so picky I was afraid I wouldn't like the outcome. Great news, I LOVE the results. Dr. DePeña is Amazing!!! I have been using his services more than several years. Dr. DePeña is very knowledgeable about all his procedures. He does my botox/dysport a few times a year with great results. His care for me is gentle with minimal pain. I like the positive routine that helps me take care of my natural age-ing process. I always enjoy my visits and leave feeling refreshed as if he has knocked a few good years off. I'm excited to try the Micro-Needling treatment next.

Update...i was SO HAPPY with the results of my first 3 microneedling sessions that I've decided not to wait for 5 months, and I've started a series of 3 more after just 3 months. Its helped profoundly with sagging and lines and texture and even, if its not a coincidence, with acne. i honestly didn't think that i would be as happy as i am with the results this quickly. I thought id need to do laser again, but i feel that this works as well but with less hassle and expense. My skin looks so much healthier and i look and feel so much better.

Currently in month 3 of getting laser tattoo removal on a huge back tattoo by Dr. De Peña and WOW, after my first treatment it faded it by 50%. I'm most likely supposed to have 8 and he believes it will be gone entirely. And I'm already seeing nothing but perfect results.
This doctor is SO good, so friendly, so understanding, and way more knowledgeable and can explain procedures way more than any other doctor I've been too can.
The office is spotless and organized, great services and offers reasonable prices. Of course it's painful but it's 110% worth it.

Dr DePena performed the PRP process on my torn achilles tendon, and inflamed knees. He withdrew blood from a superficial vein, ran that blood into his centrifuge machine, which separates out certain components, then reinjected the ultra rich product into my knees and ankles (which have been damaged over the years.) Though, there was not an immediate response, over the weeks, and now a couple months post, I've noticed much less achiness. I have been coupling this PRP process with physical therapy, and the 2 coupled together is a winner. THANKS Dr. DePena!!!

This review is based on my initial treatment - an IPL photofacial. Dr. dePena explained the procedure in advance and happily answered questions. He was very attentive and made sure that the intensity of light wasn't bothering me. The pain was very minimal, much less than a rubber band snap. I had some mild redness afterward. All in all, a very good experience at a reasonable price. The office is also conveniently located and comfortable.

He's amazing, professional, informative, and he knows what he's doing! I will be back and I'm beyond happy that I found someone I can trust! My highest regards. I had occasion to accompany a friend of mine to Dr. Tye dePena's Med-Spa. My friend was having a very large full chest tattoo removed. Dr. dePena's Med-Spa is much more than a doctor's office I learned, however, I really appreciated that for this procedure, which really is medical, that Med-Spa is immaculate and that Dr. dePena is so careful about his work. My friend was very satisfied with the session, and mentioned that for him it wasn't even particularly uncomfortable. I learned that Med-Spa does dermabrasion and other similar treatments. I thought Dr. De Pena was very educated and thorough. He seems to enjoy his job very much! I gave 3 stars because of product unavailability. When i wanted to do juvaderm (based on price) instead of voluma (the more expensive treatment), the office was 'out'. On impulse i went big and did voluma, which i loved! The next treatment i asked for juvaderm, and when about finished was told that he accidentally used voluma. So i paid another $100 that i wasn't expecting to. I had been thinking of getting my 15 year old tattoo removed for some time and made the mistake of making an appointment with Dr. dePena. Upon my initial consultation, I was sold a series of 5 laser tattoo removals for $2000.00 without any type of skin test or explanation of how severe the pain would be. Dr. dePena gave me a Marcaine injection to numb my skin which nearly caused me to pass out and left me with a rapidly beating heart for days. I had to get an old tattoo removed off my chest, the process can be painful and stressful; I found Dr. dePeña and he walked me through the entire process and explained everything.
The treatments are short, at times not painful, sometimes extremely painful, depending on the area, Just ask to slow down or speed up depending on what you can handle, talking your way through the treatment helps. The number of treatments, depends on what your body can handle.
