Civil law seeks to resolve non-criminal disputes between the aggrieved parties. Most civil cases involve disputes related to breach of contract, the collection of a debt, monetary compensation for personal injuries, property damage, or family law issues such as divorce. The function of civil law is to provide a legal remedy, either a monetary compensation or an injunction, to resolve a dispute.

A contract intends to formalize an agreement between two or more parties, in relation to a particular subject. Generally, for a contract to be enforceable, the following elements have to be present: mutual agreement, offer and acceptance, consideration, and performance or delivery. Most contracts that can be carried out within one year can be either oral or written.
